April 6 – 7
Stone Creek GC
After just a week of warm weather, the Notre Dame Club golf team traveled to Stone Creek GC in Urbana, Illinois to participate in the first NCCGA Central Region Tournament of the spring season.
Playing in 35-40 MPH winds on Saturday, both the A and B teams struggled to stay patient in the brutal conditions. That said, A team members Brian Miller and Dan Wiegandt performed decently well despite the wind, posting a pair of 84s (only 12 other players in the field of 58 broke 90 on Saturday). Greg Bourdon (92), Wes Greene (93), and Chris Paluf (95) rounded out the scoring for the A team in the 8-count-5 format. This 448 total was good enough for 2nd place after one day – 1 shot clear of Missouri, but 9 back of Wisconsin (White).
Meanwhile on the B team, newcomer Phil Krebs posted a fine 89 to lead Notre Dame’s second squad. Playing with just 6 members, however, the B team struggled to a team total of 523.
Day two brought clear skies and calmer winds, and Notre Dame’s A team capitalized on the easier scoring conditions. Bourdon (75), Wiegandt (79), and Miller (80) all posted scores of 80 or better and earned All-Tournament honors for their efforts over the weekend. Nick Howard-Johnson’s 82 and Andrew Verwilst’s 85 brought the A team’s Sunday total to 401 and two-day total to 849. Despite the squad’s valiant comeback efforts, however, the A team finished in second place, three shots back of Wisconsin (White).
The B team, meanwhile, also posted solid numbers on Sunday. Phil Krebs (83), Sam Herr (86), and Mike Kennedy (88) led the squad to a second day total of 451 and a two-day total of 974.
In the end, both the A and B teams had a fantastic weekend in Urbana, full of great golf and team bonding.
