Men’s Hockey

3.8.14 Hockey 6

During the first half of the season, the men’s hockey team participates in No Shave November,  which raises awareness for men’s health issues, with a specific focus on prostate cancer. Created by the Movember Foundation, men across the globe grow beards and mustaches to raise awareness and money for the foundation, raising more than $59 million.

To raise money during November for the foundation, the hockey team sells $1 fake mustaches for the fans to wear during the games and hosts a Chuck-A-Puck contest with a $5 entry fee. The team also organizes a silent auction, with prizes such as autographed hockey sticks and Zamboni rides at future games. The team also has an official fundraising page on the Movember Foundation website where people can donate through the hockey team.

During the second half of the season, the team usually hosts a special jersey auction that benefits a charity of the players’ choosing. The players works with our equipment manager to design the jersey and we auction it off after the weekend we wear those jersey.

Thank you, Notre Dame Hockey, for your dedication to raising awareness for men’s health issues!

Men’s Basketball

Coach Brey of the men’s basketball team is an active participant in the nationwide Coaches vs. Cancer initiative, a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Since 1993, coaches have raised more than $87 million to support the American Cancer Society’s fight against cancer.

Coach Brey began working with the program in 1995 at the University of Delaware and continued his fundraising and awareness efforts here at the University of Notre Dame.  He also serves on the Coaches vs. Cancer National Council, where he impacts the overall focus of this program on an annual basis along with fellow council members.  In 2003, Coach Brey received the Coaches vs. Cancer Champion Award, presented annually to a college coach who has been significantly engaged in the program’s fundraising, education and promotional initiatives and who has demonstrated leadership in supporting the American Cancer Society’s fight to save lives.  Coach Brey has helped raise more than $2 million for the program.

The primary fundraisers for this year will include a two-day radiothon on the WSBT radio stations (July 29-30, 2015), Night of the Stars (July 31, 2015) to honor three of our local citizens who in their daily lives give of themselves to fight the battle against cancer and the Golf Classic (August 2-3, 2015), which features a silent auction of one-of-a-kind sports memorabilia and experiences, golfing, and an awards dinner at Blackthorn Golf Club.

Thank you to Coach Brey and the men’s basketball team for your work to raise money for cancer research!
