Open Book Family Fest:
A Celebration of Words in Music and Stories

SJCPL Children’s Event 2011

LAND was fortunate to be able to participate in this South Bend library event for the 2nd year in a row.  Last year I was lucky enough to wear the Curious George costume.  It was an amazing experience to see the smiles on kids faces as they lit up and started screaming and dragging their parents towards the characters.  It was a pleasure to be able to provide these children with and share in their excitement!  I as well as the rest of my club members believe that children need continued encouragement to read.  This year I had the pleasure of being a “handler.”  This entailed leading a costumed character around and interacting verbally with the children since of course characters such as Curious George, Maisy Mouse, Clifford, Mouse (from If you give a mouse a cookie), and Froggy do not speak.  I was impressed to see that Clifford the Big Red Dog is still popular!! Many of the club members and I reminisced over our young days watching and reading Clifford.  I am glad that such a wholesome story has survived the years.

All I can say is this event, really revived my own desire to read after seeing these kids and parents enjoying the books, authors, story tellers, and singers (plus a banjo player!-Jim Gill)
Enjoy some pictures that were taken by James Doan ’12 at the event!
