Chapter 2: Murders in Eden

Harris systematically explains why the previously held theory that people farmed to have surplus and leisure time is not true. He argues that instead groups kept their population size low so that they could enjoy a high standard of living. Groups were able to keep population size low through infanticide of primarily females, geronticide, and breastfeeding for long after birth to decrease the prevalence of ovulation and therefore pregnancy.
