Welcome to Baby No. 7 Billion!

Posted on November 7, 2011 in News by Mary

According to the United Nations, the world community saw the birth of its seven billionth member this month. While some may hesitate to see this birth as nothing more than fearful evidence of the myth of overpopulation, we are happy to join the celebrations that welcome this child to its earthly home! As one new mother in Nigeria said, “Where there is life, there is hope.”

With every new life there is joy, as well as the reminder that this new child is born into a community where interdependent rights and responsibilities are crucial for the thriving of each of its members. May we never forget that we are “our brother’s keeper”, but may we always see this as a priviledge not a burden!

Bread of Life Dinner

Posted on October 24, 2011 in Uncategorized by Bryce

The Notre Dame Center for Ethics and Culture would like to invite you to the fifth semi-annual Bread of Life dinner on Tuesday, November 1st at 6:00 p.m. in the Notre Dame Room in the Morris Inn. This year’s featured speaker is Mary O’Callaghan, PhD, InForming Life Board Member. Her talk is entitled, “Prenatal Diagnosis: Embracing and Supporting a Culture of Life,” and will be followed by a catered dinner and discussion, with a professor joining each table of students.

Bread of Life seeks to promote discussion amongst students on their attitudes towards beginning of life ethical issues. With this event, we particularly hope to attract students who may not already be strongly committed to the Church’s teachings on these issues but who are open to exploring them.

Space is limited, so if you would like to participate, please e-mail your name, year, major and a brief statement of why you would like to attend to

The new pro-life movie 180 has become an overnight sensation as nearly half a million people have watched the 33-minute documentary in just one week since director and producer Ray Comfort released it to the public. Titled to reflect the complete turnaround in the mindsets of all to whom the question is posed, the award-winning film shows eight “pro-choice” people, mostly college students, changing their stance to pro-life just moments after the question is asked in its entirety. The film can be screened online here.

Hemingway, Johnson, and Brooks on Abortion

Posted on September 22, 2011 in Uncategorized by Bryce

Sometimes it’s good to step back from statistics, abstractions, and punditry, and to look closely at the concrete ways in which abortion damages relationships and brings heartache both to the mother and to the father of the aborted.

Beneath the tip of the textual iceberg that is Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants,” we sense a world of pain and guilt brought on by the prospect of abortion — “Doesn’t it mean anything to you?”

Denis Johnson’s “Dirty Wedding” addresses the same themes with a little less restraint. Its closing paragraphs are among the most forceful in contemporary writing — “It wasn’t what the doctors did, it wasn’t what the woman did. It was what the mother and father did together.”

The Mother” by Gwendolyn Brooks is a hauntingly honest take on the emotional devastation that abortion inflicts on mothers — “I have heard in the voices of the wind the voices of my dim killed children.”
