Volunteer reflects on her experience with Take Ten

By Victoria Tokarski, Take Ten Volunteer

Since I started volunteering for Take Ten, I have found that youth violence is a major problem in the lives of most of the students that I spend time with each week. Living in a suburb of Detroit for my whole life, I have heard about violence in schools, but I never knew children who experienced it first-hand. The students I work with share stories with me about how they have witnessed drive-by shootings, fights on the playground, and bullying. I cannot imagine dealing with these problems and I am much older than the students who experience these situations on a daily basis. That is why I am happy to spend an hour every week talking to the students and teaching them non-violent ways to solve their conflicts. If these students use what they have learned in Take Ten, hopefully their lives will become safer and more peaceful.
