countless civil wars; revolutions; falling empires; economic depression; fascist and communist dictatorships; foreign invasions; mass genocide; nuclear meltdowns;\u00a0racist xenophobia; populist hysteria; assassinations; class violence; entrenched poverty; terrorism; torture; and environmental devastation.\u00a0 It\u2019s amazing our world has survived this mess!<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 class=\"posttitle\"><strong>Unfortunately, my generation has passed many of these problems down to your generation. \u00a0 (Sorry about that). \u00a0 For this reason, I have added &#8220;And Beyond . . .&#8221; to the title of this course. \u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 class=\"posttitle\"><strong>I define the Twentieth Century as the period between the outbreak of World War I on July 28, 1914 and the terrorist attacks on the United States of September 11, 2001.\u00a0 We will explore this troubled century of Hell by focusing on four themes:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<div class=\"entry\">\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/10-images-of-hell\/experiencing-hell\/\">The experience of Hell<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/10-images-of-hell\/the-origins-of-hell\/\">The causes of Hell<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/10-images-of-hell\/the-implications-of-hell\/\">The consequences of Hell<\/a><\/span>,\u00a0and finally<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/10-images-of-hell\/the-duty-to-combat-hell\/\">The obligation to act\u00a0on Hell<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>To address these themes, we will turn to ten widely-recognized images of Hell.\u00a0 These are World War I; the Holocaust; existentialist <em>Angst<\/em>; tyranny and madness; totalitarianism; technological dystopia; moral bankruptcy; poverty; torture; and the destruction of our natural environment.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5><strong>I have four goals\u00a0for this seminar. \u00a0We will pursue them simultaneously in each class.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900\">To introduce you to a fascinating period in the history and politics of the modern world<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900\">To familiarize you with four key concepts in the study of politics and society\u2014description, explanation, analysis, and prescription<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900\">To develop your reading, writing, and speaking skills.<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900\">Above all, I want to\u00a0teach you\u00a0how to persuade.\u00a0 I\u00a0 believe all Notre Dame students should become leaders.\u00a0 Leadership is all about persuasion.<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>I have designed this seminar to be demanding.\u00a0 To avoid being left behind, you must keep up with all of your assignments.\u00a0 I expect each of you to participate fully in everything we do.\u00a0 This includes speaking in class, communicating with your classmates over Sakai, and daring to think for yourself.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5><strong>You are now looking at the authoritative syllabus for the seminar.\u00a0 I do not use a paper syllabus.\u00a0 That would be <em>soooo <\/em>1990s.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5><strong>Throughout our seminar, I will modify\u00a0our schedule and assignments on a regular basis. \u00a0I will add some things and delete others. \u00a0You never know what surprises you will find on this syllabus. \u00a0Thus, you are responsible for consulting these pages routinely throughout the semester.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>NOTE:\u00a0 <em>Please leave your technology at home.\u00a0 This includes electronic devices of any kind, such as laptops, i-Pads, I-phones, Kindles, video cameras, video games, or other personal digital devices<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Twentieth Century was a century of pure Hell \u2014 two world wars;
