Bon Anniversaire, Nichole!<\/span><\/p>\n

As I write, it after midnight which means it is N<\/span>ichole\u2019s 30<\/span>th<\/span> birthday (it is also my 42<\/span>nd<\/span> birthday, but that is not the point of my story)! We have discussed it at various points this <\/span>week<\/span>,<\/span> and it has been a point of reflection for me as we have traveled on our journey. The last time I came to <\/span>France<\/span>,<\/span> it was a month or so after my 30<\/span>th<\/span> birthday.<\/span> I was here for <\/span>work<\/span> like I am currently, but as <\/span>I<\/span> compare and contrast those trips, I cann<\/span>ot believe <\/span>the differences (along with <\/span>a few similarities). <\/span><\/p>\n

The last time I was in France it was a whirlwind of appointments and meeting<\/span>s, I never once stepped into a c<\/span>hurch<\/span>, a chapel, or a cathedral<\/span> and I barely took a moment to consider what I was seeing (except for <\/span>the fabrics I<\/span> <\/span>select<\/span>ed<\/span> at the fabric show). While this trip has been no less busy and I am equally exhausted, it has been incredible to have our focus be to take in our surroundings and consider them in the context of <\/span>our work, our personal lives, and our faith. It has been <\/span>a wonderful balance of history, reflection, and community. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout our time in LeMans, Ahuill<\/span>\u00e9<\/span>, and Laign<\/span>\u00e9<\/span>-en-Belin, we have heard the story of<\/span> <\/span>Fr.<\/span> <\/span>Moreau say<\/span>ing yes to the request t<\/span>o send Fr. Sorin and the Broth<\/span>ers to Indiana<\/span>,<\/span> and<\/span> I am amazed by the <\/span>sacrifices that had to be made to make the trip possible<\/span>.<\/span> I don\u2019t know that I fully understood the magnitude of such a request.<\/span> It required <\/span>incre<\/span>di<\/span>ble<\/span> faith and vision, and it speaks to<\/span> how important<\/span> education was to Moreau<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>As I reflect on the time of my previous trip<\/span> to now<\/span>, I am struck<\/span> by their sacrifices and<\/span> by what it means to love what you do. <\/span>While I enjoyed my<\/span> career<\/span> during my last trip to France<\/span>, I would not say that <\/span>I was particularly fulfilled by my work<\/span>. <\/span>I cannot articulate how <\/span>grateful<\/span> I am that<\/span> Fr. Moreau, Fr. <\/span>Sorin<\/span>, and the Brothers<\/span> <\/span>were willing to take a risk and believed their<\/span> mission would succeed. Their <\/span>faith<\/span> has provided a new career path for me in work that I <\/span>truly<\/span> love<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The trip does have similarities, too. <\/span>Like my last trip to France<\/span>, <\/span>I am <\/span>enjoying <\/span>excellent<\/span> <\/span>meals<\/span>,<\/span> but most importantly I am traveling with an amazing group of colleagues (including our hosts. Fr. John De Riso, C.S.C., Rector of the Shrine of Blessed Basil Moreau and Tiphaine<\/span> <\/span>Hamerel<\/span>).<\/span> Each of my fellow pilgrims <\/span>ha<\/span>s<\/span> enriched this trip for me. And for that, I am most grateful.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

So, to my fellow pilgrim, Nichole, Bon Anniversaire! Thank you for providing an additional catalyst for reflection by turning 30!<\/span><\/p>\n

PS-As an FYI, I do not believe I am going to be in trouble for sharing Nichole\u2019s age since she has publicly shared it as well (but on the off-chance I am in trouble, I promise to make it up to her with a birthday pastry or one of Willerton\u2019s baguettes).<\/p>\n
