Juday Creek, IN"},"content":{"rendered":"<div title=\"Page 3\"><\/div>\n<div title=\"Page 3\"><b>Juday Creek is a groundwater fed tributary of the St. Joseph River.<\/b> \u00a0 The creek is 19 km long with a drainage area of approximately 98 km^2. \u00a0Although Juday Creek is dominated by residential, commercial and agricultural land usage, there are reaches of the stream that still include natural woodland, as in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.izaaksb.com\">Izaac Walton League South Bend<\/a>\u00a0property\u00a0where we will be sampling. \u00a0 In 1990&#8217;s the stream was diverted to make way for construction of the Warren Golf Course.<\/div>\n<div title=\"Page 3\">\n<p>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-106\" style=\"line-height: 1.5em\" alt=\"juday creek\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/bios21202\/files\/2014\/04\/juday-creek-300x226.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/bios21202\/files\/2014\/04\/juday-creek-300x226.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/bios21202\/files\/2014\/04\/juday-creek-1024x772.png 1024w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/bios21202\/files\/2014\/04\/juday-creek.png 1093w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Juday Creek is home to reproducing trout populations and we will occasionally see large trout running upstream during the spring. \u00a0 If you encounter such a fish, please admire it quietly from a distance.<\/p>\n<p>The location were we are sampling is just upstream from where the stream empties into the St. Joseph River, which then runs north and empties into Lake Michigan. \u00a0 The northern section of South Bend (including Notre Dame) is part of the St. Joseph River Basin, while the southern portion of South Bend (like near the original Bruno&#8217;s on Prairie Ave.) is part of the Kankakee River Basin and empties into the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) maintains a gauging station on Juday Creek in Izaac Walton League. \u00a0This gauging station measures the height of water in the stream and estimates the discharge rate (cubic feet per second) of water moving through that point of the stream.<\/p>\n<p>You can check current conditions at Juday Creek here:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/waterdata.usgs.gov\/usa\/nwis\/uv?04101370\">Juday Creek Flow Rate and Discharge Gauge<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Concept Check Question (answer on Sakai):<\/strong><\/p>\n<div title=\"Page 2\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Which of the following statements about Juday Creek is FALSE?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>A.
