{"id":139,"date":"2011-01-12T21:57:40","date_gmt":"2011-01-12T21:57:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/communism\/?page_id=139"},"modified":"2011-02-24T17:31:47","modified_gmt":"2011-02-24T17:31:47","slug":"competitors-3","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/communism\/?page_id=139","title":{"rendered":"COMPETITORS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>13.\u00a0 LECTURE:<em>\u00a0 Wednesday, February 16<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>\u201cEnemies of the People.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0 High Stalinism was an era of extremes.\u00a0 Some of these extremes were reflected in the explosive growth of the Soviet economy in the 1930s and the\u00a0 glorification of the \u201cheroic worker,\u201d as you can see in these\u00a0images of the Stakhanovite movement (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.soviethistory.org\/bigScreenVideo.php?SubjectID=1936stakhanov&amp;Year=1936&amp;navi=byYear\">video<\/a>) and in the construction of the industrial city, Magnitogorsk (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.soviethistory.org\/bigScreenVideo.php?SubjectID=1929magnitogorsk&amp;Year=1929&amp;navi=byYear\">video<\/a>).\u00a0 But of course, there were also the indescribable and incomprehensible extremes of Stalin\u2019s purges and\u00a0nothing less than the murder\u00a0of the old communist elite.\u00a0 It is both puzzling and disturbing to think that so many people (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.soviethistory.org\/bigScreenVideo.php?SubjectID=1936terror&amp;Year=1936&amp;navi=byYear\">video<\/a>) went along with these polices.\u00a0 It is even harder to understand why this should have been true of some of\u00a0the<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/communism\/files\/2011\/01\/Whirlwind02_1809735b1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-403\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/communism\/files\/2011\/01\/Whirlwind02_1809735b1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"125\" \/><\/a> victims as well.\u00a0 For the Soviet Union, the suffering was devastating, as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.osaarchivum.org\/gulag\/index.html\">these slides<\/a> attest.\u00a0 But paradoxically, many people, both high officials and ordinary Russians, seemed to love Stalin all the more, as you can see in this\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vXJh7PB6LOU&amp;feature=related\">video<\/a> or this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fordham.edu\/halsall\/mod\/stalin-worship.html\">hymn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cZ\u201d, \u201cTo the Stalin Mausoleum,\u201d section VI.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">Arthur Koestler, <em>Darkness at Noon<\/em>.
