When we realized you weren\u2019t here<br \/>\nwe sat with our hands folded on our desks<br \/>\nin silence, for the full two hours<\/p>\n<p><em>Everything<\/em>. I gave an exam worth<br \/>\n40 percent of the grade for this term<br \/>\nand assigned some reading due today<br \/>\non which I\u2019m about to hand out a quiz<br \/>\nworth 50 percent<\/p>\n<p><em>Nothing<\/em>. None of the content of this course<br \/>\nhas value or meaning<\/p>\n<p>Take as many days off as you like:<br \/>\nany activities we undertake as a class<br \/>\nI assure you will not matter either to you or me<br \/>\nand are without purpose<\/p>\n<p><em>Everything<\/em>. A few minutes after we began last time<br \/>\na shaft of light suddenly descended and an angel<br \/>\nor other heavenly being appeared<br \/>\nand revealed to us what each woman or man must do<br \/>\nto attain divine wisdom in this life and<br \/>\nthe hereafter<\/p>\n<p>This is the last time the class will meet<br \/>\nbefore we disperse to bring the good news to all people<br \/>\non earth.<\/p>\n<p><em>Nothing<\/em>. When you are not present<br \/>\nhow could something significant occur?<\/p>\n<p><em>Everything<\/em>. Contained in this classroom<br \/>\nis a microcosm of human experience<br \/>\nassembled for you to query and examine and ponder<br \/>\nThis is not the only place such an opportunity has been<br \/>\ngathered<\/p>\n<p>but it was one place<\/p>\n<p>And you weren\u2019t here<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cDid I Miss Anything?\u201d By Tom Wayman.
