leveraging rather than resisting, emotion in data visualization &#8211; can help us learn, remember, and communicate with data in a stronger and more equitable way.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key Terms<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Partial Perspective<\/span><\/strong> : a frame that makes the viewer believe they can see everything, making it appear as though the viewer can see an entirely neutral perspective when that is not exactly true <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Data-Ink Ratio<\/span><\/strong> : a view where the designer should strive to use ink to display data alone instead of color and embellishment (this idea creates a false binary between emotion and reason)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Rhetoric<\/span><\/strong> : the faculty of observing in any given case the available means of persuasion<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Framing Effects<\/span><\/strong> : editorial choices that have an impact on how people interpret graphics\/data visualization and what they take away from them<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Provenance Rhetoric<\/span><\/strong> : something that is designed to signal the transparency and trustworthiness of the presentation source to end users<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Situated<\/span><\/strong> : the idea that forms of knowledge are produced by specific people in specific circumstances &#8211; cultural, historical, and geographic<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Feminist Objectivity<\/span><\/strong> : a tool that can account for the situated nature of knowledge and can bring together multiple, or partial, perspectives<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Strong Objectivity\/Standpoint Theory<\/span><\/strong> : a form of objectivity that works toward a more inclusive knowledge production by centering the perspectives &#8211; or standpoints &#8211; of groups that are otherwise excluded from he knowledge-making process<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Positionality<\/span><\/strong> : a concept that emphasizes how individuals come to knowledge-making processes from multiple positions, each determined by culture and context<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Affect<\/span><\/strong> : the term that academics use to refer to emotions and other subjective feelings<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Visceralizations<\/span><\/strong> : representations of data that the whole body can experience, emotionally as well as physically<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Heuristics<\/span><\/strong> : using mental shortcuts to make judgements<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/data-feminism\/challenge-power\/\">Previous Principle<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/data-feminism\/rethink-binaries-and-hierarchies\/\">Next Principle<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Elevating emotion and embodiment is the idea that activating emotion &#8211;
