{"id":66,"date":"2022-08-01T09:36:35","date_gmt":"2022-08-01T13:36:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/drichter\/?page_id=66"},"modified":"2024-03-27T16:37:10","modified_gmt":"2024-03-27T20:37:10","slug":"faith-in-the-classroom","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/drichter\/faith-in-the-classroom\/","title":{"rendered":"Bringing Faith into the Classroom"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:italic;font-weight:700;text-transform:capitalize\">Unsure of how you can bring faith into the classroom?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:700\">Prayers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:500\" class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">See Resources page for specific prayers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Open class with a prayer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Have the class memorize a prayer (e.g., Salve Regina)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Put prayers for knowledge, peace, etc. on the bottom of exam sheets<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Bring students and their needs into your personal prayer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Have religious items in your office or lab such as crucifix, icon, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Offer prayer cards during exam\/difficult weeks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Outside of class, pray for your students by name (at home with family, at beginning of semester, in a chapel, etc.)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ask for the Holy Spirit&#8217;s guidance for each and every lecture, meeting, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Periodic email announcements whose purpose is to encourage and build up\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lighting candles at Grotto, sending picture to students during finals saying that you are praying for them<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Asking if students want to lead prayers\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Can gauge individual interest at beginning of the semester using so as not to cold-call<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:700\">Discussion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:500\" class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Take time to talk about important matters, including relationships, discernment, responsibility, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Remind them of the true source of worth and value\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to be perfect\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cYour worth is not dictated by your GPA\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">In science and technology classes, directly confront questions of \u201cwhat is a human\u201d when considering things like biology, robotics, AI, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Ask the students to reflect on what makes a Catholic [career\/profession] different than others (e.g., what makes a Catholic engineer versus a secular engineer?)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Students across all disciplines would benefit from re-emphasizing the need for silence, meditation, and prayer especially as a tool for discernment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Remind\/link content to nearby feast days (Saints&#8217; feasts, other liturgical days)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Use order\/Logos\/sense of wonder to point to God&#8217;s existence, especially in quantitative courses\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Compare the tempo of a Mozart symphony to the heartbeat during an ultrasound, use to discuss the principle of ratios<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Ethics centered on Catholic social teaching and\/or Christian account of the Common Good<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Most students will have already taken a foundation theology course: Ask how these theological ideas manifest in your specific discipline<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:700\">Relationship with Students<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:500\" class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Arrange one on one meetings with the students about discernment\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Not just career discernment, but marriage, family, religious life, etc. These are rarely mentioned in career centers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cast careers in your discipline as vocations or callings from God<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What are the ultimate goods in life? Strictly material? How to avoid seductions of money, power, etc?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Meet the students where they are. There is no \u201ctypical situation\u201d, even if you might start to think that way.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Have a mechanism so that students can feel comfortable talking and you can listen<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Help the students, even temporarily, to be free from ambition and lean on God&#8217;s mercy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Mental health is an opening: where is the source of your worth? <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Attend events of your students to get to know them and show you care (sports, plays\/performances, etc)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Provide students with opportunities to see your family\/extracurricular life<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Graduate students have a very different experience from undergraduate\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Many resources are targeted towards undergrads<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stage in life is different (families, job outlooks, etc)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many current\/former ND graduate students recall being very isolated<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advisor\/advisee relationship is an opportunity for close discussion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>See <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/drichter\/files\/2023\/10\/Leaven-Graduate-Education-Fall-2023-Dowling.pdf\" data-type=\"attachment\" data-id=\"175\">remarks from 9\/22\/23<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Outcomes <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:500\" class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">In a theology class students were asked to write something that they wanted to professor to know.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>14 out of 16 said that they were &#8220;scared&#8221; because they &#8220;know nothing about the Church\/Faith&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Zero instances of reported student discomfort, negative comments on CIFs, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Many anecdotes of students personally thanking instructors for bringing spiritual matters into classroom discussion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unsure of how you can bring faith into the classroom?
