EmpowerHER is a community-driven digital health initiative designed to improve breast cancer awareness, promote early detection, and expand access to care for women across Northeast Indiana. At its core, EmpowerHER addresses a critical gap in healthcare: many women, particularly those from underserved communities, face significant barriers to accessing reliable information, understanding their health risks, and navigating an often complex and overwhelming medical system. These barriers can lead to delays in screening, diagnosis, and treatment, ultimately contributing to poorer health outcomes.
EmpowerHER was created to help bridge these gaps by providing clear, accessible, and trustworthy information alongside practical tools that support women in making informed decisions about their health. The platform is not only focused on education, but also on empowering individuals with the confidence and guidance needed to take actionable steps toward prevention, screening, and care.
Originally developed to support Latina women in South Bend, EmpowerHER has since expanded to reach a broader population while maintaining a strong commitment to cultural responsiveness, accessibility, and community engagement. This expansion reflects a key insight from the project’s research: although disparities are especially pronounced among Latina women, many of the structural and informational barriers they face, such as limited access to care, language differences, low health literacy, financial constraints, and mistrust of healthcare systems, affect a wide range of individuals across the region.
Through direct engagement with community members, EmpowerHER has been shaped by the lived experiences, concerns, and needs of the women it aims to serve. This community-centered approach ensures that the platform is not only informative, but also relevant, culturally sensitive, and easy to use. By prioritizing clarity, accessibility, and trust, EmpowerHER seeks to create a supportive environment where women feel empowered to learn about their health, seek care when needed, and navigate available resources with greater confidence.
