Tuesday, November 26.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Today, I am asking you to read several essays about\u00a0the use of torture as a response to terrorism.\u00a0 We will discuss three interrelated issues:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">a.\u00a0 What is torture?\u00a0 b.\u00a0 Is\u00a0torture morally acceptable under some circumstances?\u00a0 Are there good and bad forms of torture?\u00a0 c.\u00a0 What, if anything, does torture do to the torturer?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Specifically, we will use two cases of torture as a background to our discussion:\u00a0 1) \u00a0the \u201cprisoner abuse\u201d (or torture) of inmates at Abu Ghraib; 2) the use of \u201cwaterboarding\u201d as an interrogation technique.\u00a0 Overall, I\u2019d\u00a0like you to think in broader terms about the use of torture as a means for combatting terrorism.\u00a0 In addition, I would like you to think about the way we treat our\u00a0enemies.\u00a0 Should we treat them as they treat us or should we treat them as we would hope to be treated?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Torture at Abu Ghraib:<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\">\n<ul style=\"text-align: left\">\n<li>CBS Reports: \u201cPrisoner Abuse at Abu Ghraib\u201d: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?f=\/g\/a\/2004\/05\/06\/iraqabusepix.DTL\">SKIM<\/a><\/li>\n<li>U.
