{"id":1,"date":"2013-06-21T15:37:11","date_gmt":"2013-06-21T15:37:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/hell-in-the-twentieth-century\/?p=1"},"modified":"2013-09-16T19:47:17","modified_gmt":"2013-09-16T19:47:17","slug":"hello-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/hell-in-the-twentieth-century\/2013\/06\/21\/hello-world\/","title":{"rendered":"THIS IS A SEMINAR ABOUT HELL!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Twentieth Century was a century of pure Hell \u2014 two world wars; countless civil wars; revolutions; falling empires; economic depression; fascist and communist dictatorships; foreign invasions; mass genocide; nuclear meltdowns;\u00a0racist xenophobia; populist hysteria; assassinations; class violence; entrenched poverty; terrorism; and torture.\u00a0 It&#8217;s amazing the world survived!<\/p>\n<p>I define the Twentieth Century as the period between the outbreak of World War I on July 28, 1914 and the terrorist attacks on the United States of September 11, 2001.\u00a0 We will explore this troubled century of Hell by focusing on four themes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/hell-in-the-twentieth-century\/hell-1\/\"><strong>The experience of Hell<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/hell-in-the-twentieth-century\/hell-2\/\"><strong>The origins of Hell<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/hell-in-the-twentieth-century\/hell-3\/\">The moral implications of Hell<\/a>,\u00a0and finally<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/hell-in-the-twentieth-century\/hell-4\/\"><strong>The\u00a0duty to deal\u00a0with Hell<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To address these themes, we will draw upon ten widely recognized images of Hell.\u00a0 These are World War I; the Holocaust; existentialist <em>Angst<\/em>; tyranny and madness; totalitarianism; technological dystopia; moral bankruptcy; nihilism; poverty; and torture.<\/p>\n<p>I have\u00a0three goals\u00a0for this seminar.\u00a0We will pursue them simultaneously in each class.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>To introduce you to a fascinating period in the history and politics of the modern world<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>To familiarize you with four key concepts in the study of politics and society&#8212;description, explanation, analysis, and prescription<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>To develop your reading, writing, and speaking skills.\u00a0 And above all, to\u00a0<\/strong><strong>teach you\u00a0how to persuade.\u00a0 I\u00a0 believe all Notre Dame students should become leaders.\u00a0 Leadership is nothing more than the art of persuasion.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I have designed this seminar to be demanding, both in terms of your time and your demands of yourself.\u00a0 To avoid being left behind, you must keep up with all of your assignments.\u00a0 I expect each of you to participate fully in everything we do.\u00a0 This includes speaking in class, communicating with your classmates over Sakai, and daring to think for yourself.<\/p>\n<p>You are now looking at the authoritative syllabus for the seminar.\u00a0 I do not use a paper syllabus.\u00a0 That would be <em>soooo <\/em>1990s.<\/p>\n<p>The great feature of an electronic site is that I can modify\u00a0our schedule and assignments\u00a0as we move along.\u00a0\u00a0For this reason,\u00a0it is your responsibility to consult\u00a0these pages regularly throughout the semester.\u00a0 You never\u00a0 know what I will decide to change or\u00a0when I will decide to do it . . . .<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u03c9<\/p>\n<p><strong>NOTE<\/strong>:\u00a0 <em>Please leave your technology at home.\u00a0 This includes electronic devices of any kind, such as laptops, i-Pads, cell phones, Kindles, video cameras, video games, or other personal digital devices.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Twentieth Century was a century of pure Hell \u2014 two world wars; countless civil wars; revolutions; falling empires; economic depression; fascist and communist dictatorships; foreign invasions; mass genocide; nuclear meltdowns;\u00a0racist xenophobia; populist hysteria; assassinations; class violence; entrenched poverty; terrorism; and torture.\u00a0 It&#8217;s amazing the world survived!
