In this section of the course, we will look at four different images of Hell:\u00a0 War, Genocide, and two versions of Existential\u00a0Angst <\/em>(in a world\u00a0without God <\/em>versus a world\u00a0with God<\/em>).<\/p>\n

My goal is two fold:\u00a0 I want to acquaint you with some compelling experiences that we associate with Hell.\u00a0 Because this is a social science seminar, I also want to think about a complex term which, at first glance doesn\u2019t seem like it should be complex at all:\u00a0description.<\/em>\u00a0What do we mean when we describe something? \u00a0Why do people disagree over an exercise that seems so simple?<\/p>\n

From this point onward, I want you to devour all of the readings on this syllabus.\u00a0 In addition to the required books, please remember to bring copies of each of the assigned readings marked \u201cPrint\u201d as well as hand-outs to class.\u00a0 You need to have the required readings in hand so we can have a robust discussion.<\/p>\n

1. Tuesday, January 15<\/strong><\/p>\n

Discussion Topic<\/em>:\u00a0 Why is the idea of Hell a significant part of our daily lives?\u00a0 Why do we use the term so frequently?<\/p>\n

Today, I will outline my goals and the structure of this course.\u00a0 I will also conduct a class survey.<\/p>\n

Assignment for Thursday. \u00a0Think about the following theme. \u00a0According to Scranton, “war is hell because . . .\u201d \u00a0Then, \u00a0write one brilliantly introductory sentence which deals with this theme.<\/p>\n

After reading the chapters, you should spend at least 20 minutes choosing the best sentence. Imagine that it is the introduction to a paragraph. Your sentence should be typed and double spaced.\u00a0 All of your assignments in this seminar should adhere to these rules.<\/p>\n
