FORMS OF INEQUALITY

Mumbai cityscape with a big contrast between poverty and wealth, Maharashtra, India

There is no agreement on what are the most important dimensions of inequality.  Some forms of inequality are clearly deemed illegitimate because they are the result of long-standing practices of discrimination, based on ethnicity, race, religious creed, gender, and sexual orientation. Others, such as those based on socioeconomic origin have been seen through a different lens that recognizes inequality but explains it by pointing at observed differences in skills, education, and cultural capital. This section of our website provides an entry point to the various manifestations and forms of inequality without presuming that our categorization is exhaustive of all possible dimensions of inequality.  We, therefore, illustrate each briefly and provide access to our collection of materials for those who want to dive more deeply into a specific aspect of inequality.
