The purpose of interviewing this subject was\u00a0to hear his motivation for voluntarily moving out of his home, despite him and his partner&#8217;s health and ability to live safely on their own. I focused less on his willingness to adopt technology, and more on the emotional\/social factors that influence one&#8217;s desire\u00a0to stay-at or leave their homes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><u>Date<\/u>: February 28, 2017<\/li>\n<li><u>Type<\/u>: Phone Interview<\/li>\n<li><u>Location<\/u>: Lives in Memphis, TN<\/li>\n<li>Team participants: Conducted alone<\/li>\n<li>User Characteristics:\n<ul>\n<li>Post-retiree who moved out of his house voluntarily<\/li>\n<li>Gender: Male<\/li>\n<li>Age: 86<\/li>\n<li>Occupation: \u201cRetired\u201d Lawyer\n<ul>\n<li>Started to phase out retirement when he was 82<\/li>\n<li>Retired at end of the year but still goes in about once per week to advise and to take care of clients<\/li>\n<li>Technically in senior council<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Education: Yale B.A. \u201953, Yale Law \u201856<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Memorable Quotes:\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cIt\u2019s <strong>carefree<\/strong> living for the older people. We don\u2019t have to do a damn thing!\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI could\u2019ve retired earlier but what was I going to do? Stay home and do nothing? Once I came here 3 years ago, <strong>I was given alternatives besides\u00a0sitting at home<\/strong> and twiddling my thumbs!\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThese communities are getting more popular.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Key insights: <strong>Importance of the social factor<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Patterns: <strong>Choice, desire for activity, health<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Where are you living now?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cIt\u2019s a retirement community. I live in a private villa with Judy in a community of about 175 apartments\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIf I get to the point where I can\u2019t handle things myself, there\u2019s 20 or so assisted living and dementia\/Alzheimer\u2019s units. Along with 70 or so full care facilities and a rehab unit for people who need help if they fall or something. Doctor every morning, nurse all day. There\u2019s also a health club and trainer for people over the age of 86.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>There\u2019s a movie 5 nights a week at the theatre, a library to check out books, a pool, and more<\/li>\n<li>He is very passionate about the food options<\/li>\n<li>He eats most dinners at the facility (called the Big House), and breakfast and lunch in their home<\/li>\n<li>Wears alarm around neck that if pressed, will make people show up in 90 seconds<\/li>\n<li>Average age is somewhere in the 80s<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What motivated you to make the choice to move out?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cWe moved out because of the services available to us here, <strong>if we needed them<\/strong>. There\u2019s a medical clinic that you can go to any morning if you don\u2019t feel good, and if it\u2019s too bad, they\u2019ll get you to a hospital.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThey\u2019ll come and change a lightbulb or provide other kinds of maintenance in 10 minutes\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Do you like your neighbors?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cOh yeah! We eat almost every meal with people out here. <strong>You never have to eat by yourself<\/strong>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWe knew a few people coming in but met a lot more. <strong>There\u2019s always people to talk to<\/strong>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThere\u2019s a woman who is 101 and is active and walks, and a Rabbi who is 99 and active too\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What did you do today?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tai chi class in the morning<\/li>\n<li>Rode around in his golf cart<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI took bridge lessons from 10-12. Four of us are learning from a teacher!\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Lunch in the house<\/li>\n<li>Went to the office to take care of stuff for 2 hours<\/li>\n<li>Came home and relaxed<\/li>\n<li>Had dinner with 4 other people at the Big House<\/li>\n<li>Had a Mardi Gras meal in the main dining room and party from 6:30-8!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Are you technologically savvy?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cMedium. I use a Mac an iPad and printer\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How often do you see a doctor?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cI see my regular doctor generally once a year for a check up. Maybe a couple of times for sore throat. I see my heart doctor 3x per year to check the pacemaker\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Has seen doctor annually last 20 years \u2013 since he was 65<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Do you think about your health often?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cYes, I really do. It worries me now at 86. But it hasn\u2019t always been that way.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Got bronchitis on cruise in Alaska last year and that started me worrying<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWe come from hardy stock, Jonah!\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Do you miss the house?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cNo, not at all. Life is so much simpler here\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How much does it cost?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$5000 per month (including food), but they pay for all utilities, maintenance, and cleaning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Are you happy with your current surroundings?<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>From 1-10, it\u2019s a 10<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Takeaways:\u00a0While health is a crucial factor that affects post-retiree&#8217;s ability to remain at home, it is not always the motivation to move out. The desire for companionship and activities are a huge\u00a0draw for many, and retirement communities that offer healthcare services are often the answer. If our goal is to use the IoT to help post-retirees age in place, we will need to take the social factor into account.
