Interview 5: EXPERT (Conducted at Brothers at 5pm Thursday (3\/2)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Name: Mr. John Anella<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Gender: Male<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Age: Middle Aged<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Expert Status: Member of the South Bend School Board<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Mr. Anella attended the University of Notre Dame and studied Psych and Accounting when he went to Notre Dame, has 5 children (Senior and freshman at Adams, 7<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup>, 5<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup>, 2<\/span>nd<\/span><\/sup> grade at St. Joe, and sits on the school board. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

His two oldest children are at Adams, the other three attend St. Joe Middle and Elementary schools. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Experience and decision making for first kid: <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>First kid was so done with Catholic School. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>You live here and you have kids in the schools, <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Your friends, and your kids friends have older siblings, you hear about the schools<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>The perception of the south bend schools is terrible<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>The perception of Clay is a lot more negative than the actuality<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>My son who goes out to Washington jokes about going to the ghetto.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>There is an administrator who works at clay who sends his daughter to penn, because \u201ceven I wouldn\u2019t send my kids here\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>We lose kids in South Bend to Penn<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>The catholic schools in the area are also good. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>A lot of it is perception of the kind of environment kids want. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>If one of his youngest wanted to go to St. Joe, he would let them as long as they have taken all the options into account<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

o<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>However, his younger kids look up to their older siblings (one is an artist and one is sporty)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

o<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Most of the time, younger siblings go where the older siblings go?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Did you choose Adams because of the IB?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>It is very important to him \u2013 considering both of his boys are in it. \u201cBoth of his high schoolers are in IB, and love the program.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Obviously, you are looking for the best academic choice.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>His kids came through Catholic grade school, St. Joe<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Most kids from St. Joe went to St. Joe, about a third went to Adams <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>He likes IB over AP, curriculum that is internationally accepted. His son has two friends (one from Austria and Belgium because they can transfer back to his European schools.)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>His son is on track for the diploma and has not taken any AP classes. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

o<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Last Year, 27 got the diploma, 100 some got the certificate, <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>IB is more standardized. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>They chose the school for its IB, and the fact that it is close.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

o<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>They live less than a mile away.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Other Notes: <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>His kids are in the IB program. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>His son has participated in the Orchestra Pit at Clay, he wasn\u2019t in the school, but they needed a base player so he got to play with them. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>\u201cSouth Bend will be closing schools soon.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Downside to the Magnet: <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

o<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Gay Clay perception and you pigeonhole students<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>A referral is the most powerful thing you can do. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>A principal does set the tone for a building<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>The news loves bad media, and it just feeds the stereotypes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Clay has School Within a School \u2013 it is in school detention but not called in school detention because they\u2019re learning.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>The alternative school has a lot more resources. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Clay could be an AP magnet. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Adams will soon face enrollment options (too many students), if students can\u2019t get into Adams, might they go to Clay? <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>People also base where they go on geography<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Looking at local middle school scores \u2013 if people don\u2019t get their kid into LaSalle, they might send them into Jefferson. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

o<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>If people can\u2019t get into one of those, they bail out of the Catholic school system.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>The hardest challenge in the HS is that most teachers are white, because that is who is available. Minority faculty aren\u2019t as prevalent. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Adams has an incredible bilingual program. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>For him, as a parent, he just wants good teachers. Their level of diversity doesn\u2019t really make a difference. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Most funding comes from the state, then the local tax collections were capped (so now they get less for transportation), and they get federal dollars for students with special needs. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

o<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>If you lose a kid, you lose 65,000 dollars.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

o<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>There is not enough development<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>All the South Bend Public schools are roughly the same looking<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

o<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Most of the schools are really nice.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

o<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Clay Intermediate is falling apart a little bit. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

o<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>We should close buildings because the money is spread too thin. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Quotes: <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs a parent, I\u2019d rather choose a school because of academics.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWashington has a uniform policy, I guess there are some kids who will go there just because they don\u2019t have to wear a uniform.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen they see their friends moving to Penn or St. Joe, they\u2019re like \u2018I\u2019m not going to Clay\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOne of Mansour\u2019s challenge\u2019s is that they will have behavior problems, and it is a very small amount of kids\u2026 the joke is that every year Clay sends 50 kids to Rise Up. These schools would love to send more kids to alternative institutions.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSafety has never been an issue at Adams.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSome of the perception of danger is probably a little racist too. People have a perception that isn\u2019t always fair.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou have got to get the parents to buy in, a lot of it is getting the word out. Maybe you have to start small and earn the respect of people of the community.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
