High School Visit on Friday 3\/3\/17<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Short Interviews:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Mr. Smith \u2013 One of the adult employees of the school. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

*** He just sat down as we were about to converse with Principal Eid and started to give his opinions on everything, so this was not a formal interview, but below are my documented notes. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>There is a Fear Factor.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>The bottom 1% of students are the ones who cause all the problems, and they are where all the focus is<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>There are policies called Age Placement that mean that even if a student fails middle school, if they are high school age, they must be in the high schools. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Clay has the highest rate of suspension and expulsion, but they think that is a good thing. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>The importance of safety is extreme. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>\u201cHigh School is a microcosm of society\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>There are fights like nothing you have ever seen at Clay. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>They are trying to build a culture of respect, but it doesn\u2019t really exist yet. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>With Trump and Devos who knows what is going to happen, they are trying to pull students out of public education. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>He says marketing is great, but you can only do so much. We need real change and new programs. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Jacob Williams \u2013 Sophomore<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Favorite Part of Clay: his CTE classes (cooking and welding)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Favorite Regular Class: gym, followed by English.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He doesn\u2019t even pay attention to the Art Magnet aspect of Clay<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Thinks Classes are hard. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Jayden Riffle \u2013 Junior<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Favorite Academics: English and History<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>CTE Course: Welding<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>He thinks that there is a lot of talent at Clay, but he isn\u2019t a big arts person himself. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>He thinks classes at Clay are easy. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>He thinks he will go to college, and said Clay is helping him figure it out. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>The sports all suck, we should get new coaches<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Cameron \u2013 Freshman<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Plays sports \u2013 football, wrestling, and track<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>The arts programs are all right<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>He wants to take automotive CTE<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Some of his classes are hard<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>I showed him the cards, and he told me he can\u2019t read well.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Safety Patrol Person: <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSouth Bend schools need to get away from magnets and put everyone in blocks. Magnets hurt enrollment, and destroy the loyalty in the schools. Adams gets all the top kids.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Professors of the CTE Classes: <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>CTE is an offering only at Clay, but it is open to students at all four High Schools. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Louise Melander \u2013 dental careers (2-year program, students earn 6 credits).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Smaller number of students, most of whom are tremendously dedicated. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>They push their students, but have to teach to the middle (some students have experience, some none.)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>\u201cCTE is a well-kept secret. All of the students in Welding already have jobs.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Barb Wieczorek \u2013 Intro to Health Careers and EMS (6\/7.5 dual credits respectively)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>The students are highly motivated, and grade driven.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>They have to attend summer school to get into the CTE programs because they are half day courses. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>90% of the students go into the field of medicine. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>\u201cCTE is the only reason some students are still in High School. It makes them feel like they have found a purpose.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Only 5\/30 and 3\/9 students are from Clay HS. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
