{"id":519,"date":"2017-03-05T16:03:49","date_gmt":"2017-03-05T20:03:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/innovation-and-design-thinking\/?p=519"},"modified":"2017-03-05T16:03:49","modified_gmt":"2017-03-05T20:03:49","slug":"ethnography-summary-daniel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/innovation-and-design-thinking\/2017\/03\/05\/ethnography-summary-daniel\/","title":{"rendered":"Ethnography Summary- Daniel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Friday, Parker, Matt and I interviewed Daniel, a chronically homeless man that is usually on\u00a0the corner of S Bend Ave and Ironwood.<\/p>\n<p><b>Ethnography Summary: Daniel <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Date: 3\/3\/17<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Type: Interview<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Location: Corner of S Bend Ave and Ironwood, where he was sitting\/walking around asking for money<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Team Participants: Sarah Riehl, Matthew McCormick, Parker Mathes<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">User Characteristics:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chronically homeless<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Male, age 34<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Physically disabled<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bilateral drop foot<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Seizures <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Has seizures<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What is this person\u2019s biggest point of pain? He is physically disabled, he had seizures which led to a buildup of fluids in his legs, causing nerve damage and loss of feeling in both feet. Therefore, he cannot get a job and cannot get the funding needed for an apartment (need first and last month\u2019s rent plus security deposit).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Top 3 Learnings:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Once Daniel lost his home, he no longer had an address to receive his Medicaid, so he lost it for a month and a half, thereby making his health issues worse. Cyclical process<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The resources that South Bend provides for shelters and food pantries are good, but need long-term solutions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Physical disabilities are a huge issue for getting a job.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Key Insight:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The homeless population in South Bend needs some sort of low-income or transitional housing as a more permanent solution. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The resources available for food and temporary emergency shelters are helpful.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Activities:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Came to corner near Starbucks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Held sign \u201cHomeless and waiting for disability check. Anything helps even your prayers\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Asked for food\/money from surrounding cars <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Environment:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Corner of S Bend Ave and Ironwood, near the drive-through Starbucks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cold, very windy day <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Friday morning <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Heavy traffic <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Interactions:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Asked if we could buy him a sandwich from Starbucks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Talked to him about <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Objects:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He had two backpacks he was carrying with him<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Uses crutches <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Food from Starbucks <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cardboard sign<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Users:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Local businesses around the area<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Drivers\/traffic through the area<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">People who give him money or food<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">People who ignore him<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Friday, Parker, Matt and I interviewed Daniel, a chronically homeless man that is usually on\u00a0the corner of S Bend Ave and Ironwood.
