{"id":602,"date":"2017-03-05T22:18:54","date_gmt":"2017-03-06T02:18:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/innovation-and-design-thinking\/?p=602"},"modified":"2017-03-07T23:01:32","modified_gmt":"2017-03-08T03:01:32","slug":"analogous-immersion-high-school-mp-draft-form-still","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/innovation-and-design-thinking\/2017\/03\/05\/analogous-immersion-high-school-mp-draft-form-still\/","title":{"rendered":"Analogous Immersion (High School) &#8211; MP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Analogous Immersion \u2013 Madi\u2019s College Decision<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Process: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When I sit down to think about my college decision I remember it being quite the process.<\/p>\n<p>Stage 1: I hadn\u2019t put a lot of thought into the decision prior to High School, and in the first two years of High School I also didn\u2019t think about it a lot \u2013 I only knew I wanted to succeed, and that I had a few schools that to me equaled success.<\/p>\n<p>Stage 2: Over the summer before junior year, I remember incessant googling.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Best colleges in the United States\u2026 in Michigan\u2026 in the East\u2026 etc.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Best colleges for Business\u2026 for Liberal Arts\u2026 etc.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Most beautiful college campuses<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If you can think it, I googled it. And after lots of googling, you start to notice patterns.<\/p>\n<p>Stage 3: Then junior year we were faced with the decision at the end of the year, and the apps at the beginning of the year.<\/p>\n<p>I was noticing patterns, and compiling lists of all the schools I was considering. I compiled criteria and tried to narrow down long lists. I talked to counselors, teachers, friends, and pulled out the common app and started to fill out essays. Then, once I had a decent sized list formed, I wanted to talk to people, so the school visits began.<\/p>\n<p>Stage 4: I visited schools on the East Coast, the University of Michigan, Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, and Michigan State University.<\/p>\n<p>The visits entailed me learning a lot more about what each institution offered, what life was like on campus<\/p>\n<p>I wrote up spreadsheets, and tried to figure out where I \u201cfit\u201d. The following are the criteria I considered in my spreadsheets:<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Factors: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Price<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Faith Life<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Academics<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Job Prospects<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Alumni Network<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Location<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 My Parent\u2019s Opinions<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Safety<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ratings<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Reputation<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Options: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I applied to eight different schools, and remember thinking that I could have applied to so many more.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I was so indecisive, and despite having tons of criteria and spreadsheets and reflections, it still felt like I wasn\u2019t sure I had done enough.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I felt highly informed, but like there was still so much I did not know, and could not know until I attended any of these places as a school.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Emotions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Falling in love with places over and over again. Looking around, and feeling shock and awe that I would be privileged enough to attend these kinds of places \u2013 this is a feeling that students deciding between a lot of schools might feel, but slightly less relatable.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Being fascinated by the college students and their lives \u2013 this could be equivalent to how intermediate school students feel visiting high schools.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information, or disappointed by the lack of proper information \u2013 I\u2019m sure intermediate parents and students feel this.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Nervous that I wouldn\u2019t fit in or have friends.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I was fighting with my parents a little bit over where to go, and over my procrastination of the decision. I\u2019m sure some students feel tension with their parents when making the decision.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Worried about every aspect listed above under factors.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Five E Framework:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Entice \u2013 online articles, word of mouth, reputation, media, books, common app,<\/p>\n<p>Enter \u2013 common app (we do not know anything about what it is like to actually choose a school or register for a school?
