{"id":16,"date":"2017-05-08T13:04:07","date_gmt":"2017-05-08T17:04:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/keenan-hall\/?page_id=16"},"modified":"2024-05-15T14:47:46","modified_gmt":"2024-05-15T18:47:46","slug":"service","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/keenan-hall\/service\/","title":{"rendered":"Service"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Dismas House<\/h3>\n<p>Every Monday evening, several Knights go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dismas.org\/learn\/south-bend\">South Bend\u2019s Dismas House<\/a>, which is an organization that provides transitional\u00a0accommodations and support services for ex-offenders recently released from\u00a0jail. The goal of\u00a0<span class=\"il\">Dismas<\/span>\u00a0House is to reduce the cycle of crime by giving support\u00a0to ex-offenders who are trying to readjust to society. At Dismas House, Knights help to prepare dinner and share it with the residents. Keenan has been in partnership with Dismas House for over 35 years and is frequently honored for service with\u00a0the \u201cLoving Spoon Award\u201d, which Keenan most recently received in 2015.<\/p>\n<h3>Philanthropy<\/h3>\n<p>Several Keenan events raise money for various charitable causes. For example, the annual Muddy Sunday volleyball tournament is a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity. Keenan also collects donations at other times throughout the year, including a large, year-end Food Drive for Catholic Charities of South Bend and their partner agencies.<\/p>\n<h3>Great Pumpkin<\/h3>\n<p>For more than 12 years Keenan Hall has hosted its signature community-outreach event, The Great Pumpkin. It\u2019s an opportunity for underprivileged children in and around South Bend to come to campus and enjoy all the typical Halloween activities in a fun and safe environment. The dorm\u2019s residents set up a haunted house in their basement and some pumpkin-carving stations. They escort the kids around campus to trick-or-treat at the other residence halls.
