{"id":457,"date":"2013-10-30T11:11:37","date_gmt":"2013-10-30T15:11:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/mfa-creative-writing\/?p=457"},"modified":"2015-03-19T15:21:06","modified_gmt":"2015-03-19T19:21:06","slug":"orlando-menes-poetry-reading","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/mfa-creative-writing\/2013\/10\/30\/orlando-menes-poetry-reading\/","title":{"rendered":"Orlando Menes Poetry Reading"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/mfa-creative-writing\/files\/2013\/10\/Fetish-cover.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-458\" alt=\"Fetish cover\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/mfa-creative-writing\/files\/2013\/10\/Fetish-cover-192x300.jpg\" width=\"192\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/mfa-creative-writing\/files\/2013\/10\/Fetish-cover-192x300.jpg 192w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/mfa-creative-writing\/files\/2013\/10\/Fetish-cover.jpg 385w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 192px) 100vw, 192px\" \/><\/a>We&#8217;re thrilled to announce our very own Orlando Menes, Director of the Creative Writing Program at the University of Notre Dame and Associate Professor, will be reading from his most recent collection of poems, <i>Fetish,<\/i> at the University of Notre Dame on Wednesday, November 6<sup>th<\/sup>, 2013, at the Hammes Campus Bookstore.\u00a0 The reading will begin at 7:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p><i>Fetish <\/i>delves into the hybrid sacred, diaspora and exile, and the relationship between the cross-cultural imaginations.\u00a0 The poems sew together memories of darkness and light, pleasures and perils and stories of dislocation and loss, following a world patched together by a family over five generations from Miami to Cuba, Panama to Bolivia and Peru.\u00a0 The scents of exile and emigration provide refuge throughout, resulting in an intensely woven tapestry of Menes&#8217; Americas.<\/p>\n<p>Menes is the author of three books of poems, <i>Rumba atop the Stones<\/i> (Peepal Tree, 2001), <i>Furia <\/i>(Milkweed, 2005), and <i>Fetish <\/i>which won the 2012 Prairie Schooner Book Prize in Poetry and will be published by the University of Nebraska Press in Fall 2013.\u00a0 His writing has been published in several prominent anthologies and literary magazines, including <i>Ploughshares, Harvard Review, The Antioch Review, Prairie Schooner, Hudson Review, Shenandoah, Callaloo, Indiana Review, River Styx, Epoch, Spoon River Poetry Review, New Letters, Crab Orchard Review, <\/i>and <i>Green Mountains Review.\u00a0 <\/i>Menes has published several translations of poetry in Spanish, including <i>My Heart Flooded with Water: Selected Poems by Alfonsina Storni <\/i>(Latin American Literary Review Press, 2009).\u00a0 He also earned a Literature Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the reading, Letras Latinas, the literary program within Notre Dame\u2019s Institute for Latino Studies, is hosting a reception at 6:00 p.m. in the East Lounge on the second floor of McKenna Hall.
