Writing

I write about the literary history of Renaissance Europe, with a focus on poetry and poetics. Topics of special interest include the studia humanitatis; scholarship and criticism; style, genre, and form; and the new philosophy, on both sides of the English Channel. Articles may be found in English Literary History, Studies in Philology, and elsewhere.

My current project is called ‘Probability: A Literary History, 1479–1700’. A second book in progress has to do with the history of ‘method’, another with the history of literary history itself. Lately I’ve gotten interested in the social life of Latin, too.
