{"id":14,"date":"2018-07-14T15:24:42","date_gmt":"2018-07-14T19:24:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/nazli-turan\/?page_id=14"},"modified":"2021-05-13T21:38:42","modified_gmt":"2021-05-14T01:38:42","slug":"me","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/nazli-turan\/","title":{"rendered":"Nazli Turan"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-65 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/nazli-turan\/files\/2018\/07\/photo_nd-169x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/nazli-turan\/files\/2018\/07\/photo_nd-169x300.jpeg 169w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/nazli-turan\/files\/2018\/07\/photo_nd-576x1024.jpeg 576w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/nazli-turan\/files\/2018\/07\/photo_nd.jpeg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 175px) 100vw, 175px\" \/>Interests<\/h3>\n<p>I am interested in low temperature plasma physics and its applications caring about future and nature.<\/p>\n<p>I have extensively worked with low-pressure and atmospheric pressure plasmas on their electrical, thermal, and optical characterizations with following methods:<\/p>\n<p>+ built a Langmuir probe to measure plasma potential.<br \/>\n+ adapted a Gauss probe to a translational stage for magnetic field characterization of a Hall effect thruster.<br \/>\n+ utilized an IR camera and COMSOL thermal simulation to estimate substrate temperature during plasma exposure.<br \/>\n+ analyzed optical emission spectroscopy (OES) data to obtain electron temperature and vibrational\/rotational temperatures of plasma.<br \/>\n+ inserted a mm-scale surface plasma into the FTIR instrument to study plasma-driven surface modifications.<\/p>\n<p>I am currently studying on plasma-surface interactions, specifically on plasma-activated sintering of metal nanoparticles and thermoelectric thin films aiming for high-throughput additive manufacturing (AM) of conductive patterns on delicate materials. Accordingly, I am involved in a research project on <em>in-situ<\/em> plasma sintering processing of nanoinks at <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/nazli-turan\/me\/professional-experience\/\"><strong>Idaho National Laboratory<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I believe research as an intellectual activity holds significant values in reaching out to scientific community, enlightening future generations, and conveying science-based messages to public.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For research outputs, see my publications here: <a href=\"http:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/nazli-turan\/me\/publications\/\"><strong>Publications<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li>For my accomplishments on science communication and leadership: <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/nazli-turan\/me\/socially-engaged-research\/\">Socially Engaged Research<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Background<\/h3>\n<p>I obtained an MSc. degree from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Bogazici University, Istanbul, Turkey. I was a member of <a href=\"http:\/\/bustlab.boun.edu.tr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Bogazici University Space Technologies Laboratory (BUSTLab)<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>as a research assistant. I worked on Hall effect thrusters, which utilize electric and magnetic fields to extract ions from a plasma discharge.<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/bustlab.boun.edu.tr\/assets\/main_thesis_NAZLI_after_fbe_v07-compressed.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">My thesis <\/a><\/strong>focused on <em>Experimental Investigation of the Effects of Cathode Position on HK40 Hall Effect Thruster Performance and Cathode Coupling<\/em>&#8220;. I published articles at the related conferences.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I am a Ph.D. candidate at the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering in the University of Notre Dame. I am working on plasma-surface interactions as a part of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gogroup.nd.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Go Research Group<\/a><\/strong>. My studies specifically focus on highlighting a future direction where additive manufacturing of electronic devices can be achieved on low-melting point materials (<em>e.g<\/em>. plastics or textiles) at ambient conditions and investigating plasma-specific characteristics at solid interfaces in light of different plasma types that are easily generated and integrated to study chemical reactions and material treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, I am currently enrolled at the Department of History and Philosophy of Science to pursue a Graduate Minor degree.
