{"id":1668,"date":"2012-03-15T00:00:56","date_gmt":"2012-03-15T04:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.archives.nd.edu\/about\/news\/?p=1668"},"modified":"2012-03-15T00:00:56","modified_gmt":"2012-03-15T04:00:56","slug":"skiving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/skiving\/","title":{"rendered":"Skiving"},"content":{"rendered":"<!-- RSPEAK_STOP --> <a href='http:\/\/wr.readspeaker.com\/webreader\/webreader.php?cid=&amp;t=wordpress&amp;url=https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/skiving\/&amp;title=Skiving' onclick='readpage(this.href, 1668); return false;'> <img src='http:\/\/graphics.readspeaker.com\/images\/wr\/listen_.gif' style='border-style: none;' alt=''><\/a><div id='WR_1668'><\/div> <!-- RSPEAK_START --> <p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;Is it better to have &#8216;skived&#8217; and been caught, than never to have &#8216;skived&#8217; at all?&#8221; [<em>Scholastic<\/em>, 09\/15\/1888, page 68]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">If students in the 1880s-1930s maintained a<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nd.edu\/~farley\/dictionary.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Domer Dictionary<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000\">, &#8220;skive,&#8221; &#8220;skiving,&#8221; and &#8220;skiver&#8221; would be among the common terms in Notre Dame vernacular.\u00a0 While &#8220;skiving&#8221; could refer simply to cutting class, it generally had a heavier connotation of a French leave from campus with dangers of getting caught.\u00a0 Since curfew was in place during these years, &#8220;skivers&#8221; at Notre Dame would sneak out of the dorms at night and headed into town without permission.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1916\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1916\" style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1916 size-full\" title=\"GMIL-02-08-01\" src=\"http:\/\/www.archives.nd.edu\/about\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/GMIL-02-08-01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2012\/03\/GMIL-02-08-01.jpg 576w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2012\/03\/GMIL-02-08-01-300x221.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 576px) 85vw, 576px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1916\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A student &#8220;skiving&#8221; out of a Corby Hall dormitory window, 1914-1915<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Once in town, students would frequent popular hangouts such as Hullie and Mike&#8217;s Cigar Store or Jimmie and Goat&#8217;s restaurant or take in a vaudeville show at the Orpheum Theatre.\u00a0 The typical punishment for skiving seems to be demerits, which students could work off with manual labor such as shoveling snow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Skiving was so common-place it was often the subject of short stories, poems, <em>Scholastic <\/em>news items, and tall-tales of the alumni.\u00a0 The following sonnet was published in the 1913 Easter issue of <em>Scholastic<\/em> (page 382):<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">Sonnet on the Skiver<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">WHAT is a skiver? He is one that knows<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em> <span style=\"color: #000000\"> Each alley, lane, and back street in town;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em> <span style=\"color: #000000\"> To him the campus scenes are dingy brown,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em> <span style=\"color: #000000\"> And all routine of class is driest prose.<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em> <span style=\"color: #000000\"> His is the poet&#8217;s spirit that arose<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em> <span style=\"color: #000000\"> Triumphant o&#8217;er the prefect&#8217;s sternest frown,\u2014<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em> <span style=\"color: #000000\"> That hies him off, to view a game, a gown.<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em> <span style=\"color: #000000\"> To eat at Mike&#8217;s, or see the nickel shows.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8216;Tis true a haunting fear lurks in his eyes.<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em> <span style=\"color: #000000\"> And drives him oft within the handy door.<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em> <span style=\"color: #000000\"> &#8216;Tis true he&#8217;s never known to win the prize<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em> <span style=\"color: #000000\"> Of scholarship\u2014or e&#8217;en acquire its lore.<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em> <span style=\"color: #000000\"> What will he do when life&#8217;s great tasks arrive?<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em> <span style=\"color: #000000\"> Prophetic voices answer, &#8220;He will skive!&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">W.
