{"id":1867,"date":"2012-03-02T00:00:03","date_gmt":"2012-03-02T05:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.archives.nd.edu\/about\/news\/?p=1867"},"modified":"2012-03-02T00:00:03","modified_gmt":"2012-03-02T05:00:03","slug":"bengal-bouts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/bengal-bouts\/","title":{"rendered":"Bengal Bouts"},"content":{"rendered":"<!-- RSPEAK_STOP --> <a href='http:\/\/wr.readspeaker.com\/webreader\/webreader.php?cid=&amp;t=wordpress&amp;url=https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/bengal-bouts\/&amp;title=Bengal Bouts' onclick='readpage(this.href, 1867); return false;'> <img src='http:\/\/graphics.readspeaker.com\/images\/wr\/listen_.gif' style='border-style: none;' alt=''><\/a><div id='WR_1867'><\/div> <!-- RSPEAK_START --> <blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">&#8220;Strong bodies fight so that weak bodies may be nourished&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/bengal-bouts\/tournament-information\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2012 Bengal Bouts<\/a> final matches will be held Saturday, March 3rd, at 7:00pm in the Joyce Center.\u00a0 Bengal Bouts is an annual intramural boxing tournament that raises money for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.holycrossusa.org\/missions\/holy-cross-mission-center\/bangladesh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Holy Cross Missions in Bangladesh<\/a>.\u00a0 While the first student tournament was\u00a0 in 1932, charity boxing matches for the Bengal Missions date back to the 1920s.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1879\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1879\" style=\"width: 463px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1879 size-full\" title=\"PNDP-J1932-01-p36\" src=\"http:\/\/www.archives.nd.edu\/about\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/PNDP-J1932-01-p36.jpg\" width=\"463\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2012\/03\/PNDP-J1932-01-p36.jpg 463w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2012\/03\/PNDP-J1932-01-p36-217x300.jpg 217w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 463px) 85vw, 463px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1879\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Advertisement for the first annual Scholastic Boxing Show (Bengal Bouts) from the January 1932 issue of The Juggler<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the 1920s and 1930s, sporting matches of all kinds were organized as a means to raise funds for deserving causes.\u00a0 This was no less true at Notre Dame and a favorite charity among the students was the Holy Cross work in Bangladesh.\u00a0 In 1921, the students of Brownson Hall organized a smoker that featured &#8220;boxing, wrestling, a tribute to Coach Rockne, and a talk by Father O&#8217;Donnell,&#8221; and raised $150 for the Bengal Missions. In 1922 and 1923, Brother Alan arranged the Bengalese Boxing Bouts with exhibitions of outside boxers.<\/p>\n<p>February 12, 1932, marked the first annual<em> &#8220;Scholastic<\/em> Boxing Show,&#8221; organized by the student magazine <em>Scholastic <\/em>with Notre Dame students making up the contenders.\u00a0 This first tournament was set up more like an interhall match, with representatives from each dorm making up the contestants.\u00a0 Nearly two thousand people from the University and surrounding communities made up the audience, which was a record attendance for a boxing match at Notre Dame.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1868\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1868\" style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1868 size-full\" title=\"GPHR-45-1573-01\" src=\"http:\/\/www.archives.nd.edu\/about\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/GPHR-45-1573-01.jpg\" width=\"576\" height=\"444\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2012\/03\/GPHR-45-1573-01.jpg 576w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2012\/03\/GPHR-45-1573-01-300x231.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 576px) 85vw, 576px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1868\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Interior view of the Fieldhouse set up with the Bengal Bouts Boxing Ring, 1952<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The continued success of Bengal Bouts would not have been possible without the oversight of Dominick &#8220;Nappy&#8221; Napolitano (1907-1986).\u00a0 Nappy trained and mentored nearly every student boxer for more than fifty years.\u00a0 He made sure the fights were clean and fair, which was often in contrast to the culture surrounding professional boxing.\u00a0 As Budd Schulberg witnessed in 1955, &#8220;You&#8217;ll see boys battling harder for the University championships than some heavyweights have fought for the championship of the world. You will see contestants beautifully conditioned and boxing under rules of safety precaution that have precluded any serious injury in the quarter-century history of the bouts.
