return false;'> <img src='http:\/\/graphics.readspeaker.com\/images\/wr\/listen_.gif' style='border-style: none;' alt=''><\/a><div id='WR_190'><\/div> <!-- RSPEAK_START --> <p>Notre Dame and Michigan have a long and storied history, but the 2010 game will only be the 38th time the two universities have faced each other on the football field over the past 123 years.\u00a0 Their relationship in football began in 1887 when former Notre Dame student George De Haven scheduled to bring his University of Michigan teammates on a tour of football clubs in the Midwest.\u00a0 Notre Dame rounded up its best players from the Senior Department to form the first varsity football team.\u00a0 Notre Dame&#8217;s first three varsity games were against Michigan (one in the fall of 1887, two in April 1888).\u00a0 Below is the published account from <em>Scholastic<\/em> of the first game played on November 23, 1887.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-191\" title=\"PNDP-S1887-1126-p190\" src=\"http:\/\/www.archives.nd.edu\/about\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/PNDP-S1887-1126-p190.jpg\" alt=\"Scholastic 1887 article regarding first varsity football game\" width=\"481\" height=\"1022\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2010\/09\/PNDP-S1887-1126-p190.jpg 481w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2010\/09\/PNDP-S1887-1126-p190-141x300.jpg 141w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 481px) 85vw, 481px\" \/>The rivalry heated up in 1909 when Notre Dame went into Ann Arbor with a then 0-8 series record. \u00a0The Notre Dame victory came as a shock to Michigan fans and would later be the focal point in the debate over which team was the true Champion of the West.\u00a0 Notre Dame went undefeated except for a tie to Marquette and Michigan only lost to Notre Dame. \u00a0 Sports writers around the country debated for months with no clear resolution.\u00a0 The yearbooks from both schools claimed bragging rights to the championship that year.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_194\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-194\" style=\"width: 432px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-194 size-full\" title=\"GATH-24-02-02\" src=\"http:\/\/www.archives.nd.edu\/about\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/GATH-24-02-021.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"432\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2010\/09\/GATH-24-02-021.jpg 432w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2010\/09\/GATH-24-02-021-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 432px) 85vw, 432px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-194\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mike\u00a0(possibly owned by ND Coach Frank Longman) after the 1909 game<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The scheduled 1910 game was canceled at the last minute when Michigan officials declared several Notre Dame players ineligible to play. \u00a0 Animosity grew between the two universities and between Notre Dame and the Western Conference. \u00a0Notre Dame and Michigan wouldn&#8217;t meet on the gridiron again until 1942.\u00a0 That series lasted only two years and the rivalry was picked up again in 1978.\u00a0 In 1980, nearly a hundred years after their first meeting, Notre Dame finally got a win at home over Michigan with Harry Oliver&#8217;s last second, game-winning field goal.\u00a0 Michigan and Notre Dame respectively rank first and second for the highest winning percentages in college football, further fueling the rivalry and making for a great Saturday match-up.<\/p>\n<p>Sources: Scholastic 1887-1888 and 1909-1910<br \/>\n<em>Natural Enemies <\/em>by John Kryk<a href=\"http:\/\/www.und.com\/sports\/m-footbl\/spec-rel\/2010-media-guide-print.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n2010 Football Media Guide<\/a> compiled by the Athletic Department (History &amp;
