{"id":2388,"date":"2013-05-23T00:00:16","date_gmt":"2013-05-23T04:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.archives.nd.edu\/about\/news\/?p=2388"},"modified":"2013-05-23T00:00:16","modified_gmt":"2013-05-23T04:00:16","slug":"und-night","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/und-night\/","title":{"rendered":"Universal Notre Dame Night"},"content":{"rendered":"<!-- RSPEAK_STOP --> <a href='http:\/\/wr.readspeaker.com\/webreader\/webreader.php?cid=&amp;t=wordpress&amp;url=https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/und-night\/&amp;title=Universal Notre Dame Night' onclick='readpage(this.href, 2388); return false;'> <img src='http:\/\/graphics.readspeaker.com\/images\/wr\/listen_.gif' style='border-style: none;' alt=''><\/a><div id='WR_2388'><\/div> <!-- RSPEAK_START --> <p>Alumni Association president John Neeson inaugurated <a href=\"http:\/\/mynotredame.nd.edu\/s\/1210\/index.aspx?sid=1210&amp;gid=1&amp;pgid=3523\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Universal Notre Dame (UND) Night<\/a> as a means for alumni to connect with their alma mater without having to travel to campus for <a title=\"Alumni Reunion\" href=\"http:\/\/www.archives.nd.edu\/about\/news\/index.php\/2011\/alumni-reunion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alumni Reunion<\/a>.\u00a0 The first UND Night was held on April 24, 1924, and more than forty Alumni Clubs gathered in their respective cities.\u00a0 As part of the night&#8217;s entertainment, the Clubs tuned into a radio broadcast with speeches by University President Rev. Matthew Walsh, President of the Board of Trustees <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Albert_Russel_Erskine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Albert Erskine<\/a>, and Football Coach Knute Rockne.\u00a0 Fr. Walsh spoke about &#8220;the university&#8217;s plan for expansion, the unyielding observance of the traditions, the spirit of the present day student and the alumni influence in retaining that spirit in after years.&#8221;\u00a0 Rockne talked about the importance of athletics and the high standards for student athletes at Notre Dame [<em>Alumnus<\/em>, May 1924, page 243].<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3148\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3148\" style=\"width: 617px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.archives.nd.edu\/about\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/GNDL-26-10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3148\" alt=\"Universal Notre Dame Night Banquet held by the Alumni Club of New York City at the Hotel McAplin, 1932\/0418\" src=\"http:\/\/www.archives.nd.edu\/about\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/GNDL-26-10.jpg\" width=\"617\" height=\"341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2013\/05\/GNDL-26-10.jpg 720w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2013\/05\/GNDL-26-10-300x166.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3148\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Universal Notre Dame Night Banquet held by the Alumni Club of New York City at the Hotel McAplin, 1932\/0418<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>UND night was a smashing success and it quickly became a signature event for the Alumni Association.\u00a0 For many years, the celebrations utilized radio broadcasts to connect anyone within reach of the radio signal to Notre Dame.\u00a0 Other times the Alumni Association distributed films for the Clubs to watch.\u00a0 Universal Night was also an opportunity for Alumni Clubs to hold elections, honor members, and connect with fellow alums living in the same geographic area.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3142\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3142\" style=\"width: 434px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.archives.nd.edu\/about\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/PNDP-70-UN-01-1928.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3142\" alt=\"Program from the Universal Notre Dame Night, 1928\/0423\" src=\"http:\/\/www.archives.nd.edu\/about\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/PNDP-70-UN-01-1928.jpg\" width=\"434\" height=\"1757\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2013\/05\/PNDP-70-UN-01-1928.jpg 434w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2013\/05\/PNDP-70-UN-01-1928-74x300.jpg 74w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2013\/05\/PNDP-70-UN-01-1928-253x1024.jpg 253w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 434px) 85vw, 434px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3142\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Program from the Universal Notre Dame Night, 1928\/0423<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Alumni Clubs still celebrate Universal Notre Dame Night today, but it is no longer technically &#8220;universal&#8221;
