Hesburgh planning the first Parents-Son Day (Junior Parents Weekend (JPW)) for April 1953 with Junior Class Officers Jim Richards and Joe Springer, c1952.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Students took their parents on tours of campus, classrooms, and laboratories, meeting faculty and administrators. \u00a0They ate in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archives.nd.edu\/about\/news\/index.php\/2010\/dinner-is-served\/\">South Dining Hall<\/a>, played <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archives.nd.edu\/about\/news\/index.php\/2012\/william-j-burke-golf-course\/\">golf<\/a>, and stayed at the newly opened Morris Inn. \u00a0The day was an immediate success that turned into a weekend-long affair the next year and all the years that followed.<\/p>\n<p>Some questioned the scheduled April date as opposed to a football weekend when more parents might likely be in town. \u00a0However, the chaos of gameday makes it difficult for parents to see everyday student life at Notre Dame. \u00a0A special weekend just for the parents in the spring semester has worked out nicely for well over half a century.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4216\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4216\" style=\"width: 617px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4216 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.archives.nd.edu\/about\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/VOL_0094_ISSUE_0021.png\" alt=\"VOL_0094_ISSUE_0021\" width=\"617\" height=\"419\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2016\/02\/VOL_0094_ISSUE_0021.png 737w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2016\/02\/VOL_0094_ISSUE_0021-300x204.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4216\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Scholastic<\/em> welcoming parents to the first Parent-Son Day in 1953. <em>\u00a0Scholastic<\/em>, April 17, 1953, page 7<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The date of Junior Parents Weekend crept earlier and earlier until it settled in on a mid-February weekend in the 1970s, much to the <a href=\"https:\/\/domermom.com\/tag\/jpw\/\">chagrin of parents<\/a> hailing from warmer climates than South Bend. \u00a0Anecdotally, if the harsh February weather is going to break, it likely happens during JPW. \u00a0In 2017, the temperature will break 60\u00b0 and the sun will make a rare appearance, dispersing the permacloud and belying the students&#8217; complaints of cold, snow, and the stinging Indiana winds.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4212\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4212\" style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4212\" src=\"http:\/\/www.archives.nd.edu\/about\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/GPHR-45-1791-01.jpg\" alt=\"GPHR 45\/1791: Parents-Son Day (Junior Parents Weekend (JPW)), 1953\/0418. This photo was published in <em>Notre Dame: A Magazine<\/em>, Summer 1963.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>JPW has changed little over the years. \u00a0It still is a time where parents visit their children, meet their friends, tour campus and new facilities, meet faculty and administration, and maybe buy a few things at the Bookstore. \u00a0The dinners have become more formal and more elegant than the in early JPW years, but the purpose remains the same. \u00a0In addressing the parents at the first Parents-Son Day, University President Rev. Theodore M.
