{"id":933,"date":"2011-06-17T00:55:22","date_gmt":"2011-06-17T04:55:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.archives.nd.edu\/about\/news\/?p=933"},"modified":"2011-06-17T00:55:22","modified_gmt":"2011-06-17T04:55:22","slug":"campus-statue-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/campus-statue-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Campus Statue Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<!-- RSPEAK_STOP --> <a href='http:\/\/wr.readspeaker.com\/webreader\/webreader.php?cid=&amp;t=wordpress&amp;url=https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/campus-statue-project\/&amp;title=Campus Statue Project' onclick='readpage(this.href, 933); return false;'> <img src='http:\/\/graphics.readspeaker.com\/images\/wr\/listen_.gif' style='border-style: none;' alt=''><\/a><div id='WR_933'><\/div> <!-- RSPEAK_START --> <p>In the 1940s, during the midst of World War II, Notre Dame embarked on an ambitious campus beautification project, which would fill twenty empty niches on buildings around campus, including many that had stood vacant for decades.\u00a0 In 1943, classes in the Art Department were cancelled due to lack of fine art students.\u00a0 While such classes remained for the Architecture students, the faculty and artists in residence with the Art Department had some time on their hands to concentrate on the campus statue project.<\/p>\n<p>The first building to see such an installation was the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.\u00a0 In May 1944, St. Joan of Arc and St. Michael the Archangel finally found their home at the east World War I Memorial Door.\u00a0 The Memorial door itself was originally added to the Basilica in 1924, left with empty niches for twenty years.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_945\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-945\" style=\"width: 458px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-945\" title=\"GJJC-01-36-02\" src=\"http:\/\/www.archives.nd.edu\/about\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/GJJC-01-36-02.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"458\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2011\/06\/GJJC-01-36-02.jpg 458w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2011\/06\/GJJC-01-36-02-239x300.jpg 239w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 458px) 85vw, 458px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-945\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">People exiting the World War I Memorial Door of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart after the installation of the statues of St. Joan of Arc and St. Michael the Archangel, c1940s<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Few may have been &#8220;aware of the sculpture creations going on in the Old Natatorium Building behind the Dome.&#8221;\u00a0 Fortunately, Rev. John J. Bednar, CSC, sculptor of many of those statues, wrote a letter in 1980 to then-<em>Notre Dame Magazine<\/em> editor Ron Parent describing his involvement in this campus sculpture project.\u00a0 Below are excerpts from Bednar&#8217;s letter (at times Bednar refers to himself in the third-person):<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_936\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-936\" style=\"width: 399px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-936\" title=\"GBED-01-01-01\" src=\"http:\/\/www.archives.nd.edu\/about\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/GBED-01-01-01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"399\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2011\/06\/GBED-01-01-01.jpg 399w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2011\/06\/GBED-01-01-01-208x300.jpg 208w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 399px) 85vw, 399px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-936\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rev. Photo by Wally Kunkle.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #4774b7\">&#8220;[I]t might be of interest to some that all the statues were done in artificial stone, a cement mix consisting of Portland cement, white cement, silica, marble dust, and for slight coloring, Burnt Siena powder, a warm brown color.\u00a0 The figures had to be made in clay from which a mold was formed for pouring the cement mix.\u00a0 Father O&#8217;Donnell would not consent to have the figures carved out of limestone \u2013 too slow and expensive a process.\u00a0 As it was, the niches on campus buildings had been neglected for too many years.\u00a0 The World War I Memorial had the names of Joan of Arc and St. Michael carved in Gothic script below the niches in 1924, empty niches, and now we were in the middle of World War II when John Bednar filled those two niches with their namesakes!<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_946\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-946\" style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-946\" title=\"GNDS-24-49-01\" src=\"http:\/\/www.archives.nd.edu\/about\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/GNDS-24-49-01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"443\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2011\/06\/GNDS-24-49-01.jpg 576w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2011\/06\/GNDS-24-49-01-300x231.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 576px) 85vw, 576px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-946\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">World War I Memorial Door of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart before the installation of the statues of St. Joan of Arc and St. Michael the Archangel (1944), c1924-1928<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #4774b7\">&#8220;The opportunity to fill all the empty niches on campus facades came when Father Szabo of South Bend brought <a href=\"http:\/\/archives.nd.edu\/findaids\/ead\/xml\/kor.xml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eugene Kormendi<\/a> to meet with John Bednar, the sculptor in the Art Department and to see if Kormendi could obtain any sculpture commissions from the University, a likely outlet for a sculptor.\u00a0 I suggested that we could fill all the empty niches on the campus which I had been eying for years.\u00a0 I had been studying sculpture under the tutelage of Chicago&#8217;s foremost sculptor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, (received my M.F.A. in sculpture in 1940 and had introduced sculpture into the program of the Art Department at Notre Dame the same year.)\u00a0 The Szabo-Kormendi visit was perfectly timed for a sculpture project on the campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_934\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-934\" style=\"width: 343px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-934\" title=\"GBED-01-01-02\" src=\"http:\/\/www.archives.nd.edu\/about\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/GBED-01-01-02.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"343\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2011\/06\/GBED-01-01-02.jpg 343w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2011\/06\/GBED-01-01-02-179x300.jpg 179w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 343px) 85vw, 343px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-934\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rev. Bednar, CSC,&#8217;s sculpture of Cardinal John Henry Newman, c1944<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #4774b7\">&#8220;A reliable witness to the production of the campus sculptures was <a href=\"http:\/\/archives.nd.edu\/findaids\/ead\/html\/LAU.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tony Lauck<\/a>, a Moreau seminarian at the time and a sculptor of merit, who also wished to work in the Bednar-Kormendi studio on his own project, a huge block of wood for a standing figure of Christ.\u00a0 Permission granted and Tony brought two other seminarians to help him with a double-handled cross-cut saw for the preliminary shaping of the Christ figure.\u00a0 A bronze casting was made of that wood carving which can be seen today on the grounds of St. Patrick&#8217;s Church, South Bend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #4774b7\">&#8220;The St. Jerome statue on another Dillon wall, showing the great Biblical Scholar beating his chest with a rock instead of a scourge, Bednar shipped to Indianapolis before installation in the niche.\u00a0 I won a prize in sculpture at the John Herron Art Museum in a juried exhibition\u00a0 The $150 prize paid for the round trip and for the clay, the cements, marble dust etc., and brought back the approval of the jury.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_935\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-935\" style=\"width: 396px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-935\" title=\"GBED-01-01-04\" src=\"http:\/\/www.archives.nd.edu\/about\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/GBED-01-01-04.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"396\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2011\/06\/GBED-01-01-04.jpg 396w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2011\/06\/GBED-01-01-04-206x300.jpg 206w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 396px) 85vw, 396px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-935\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rev.
