Auguste Lemonnier, CSC, nephew of Rev. Edward Sorin and University President 1872-1874, was director of the Club.\u00a0 When Lemonnier tragically died in 1874 at the age of 35, the Boating Club was renamed in his honor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-967\" title=\"GSBA-02-01\" src=\"http:\/\/www.archives.nd.edu\/about\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/GSBA-02-01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2011\/06\/GSBA-02-01.jpg 576w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2011\/06\/GSBA-02-01-300x188.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 576px) 85vw, 576px\" \/><em>Boating Club on the lake, c1867-1874.<br \/>\nRev. Auguste Lemonnier, CSC, is at the far right.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Notre Dame garnered a number of boats in the second half of the 19th century, with such names as <em>Nina <\/em>(staff boat), <em>Pinta<\/em>, <em>Santa Maria<\/em>, <em>Hiawatha<\/em>, <em>Minnehaha<\/em>, <em>Montmorency<\/em>, <em>Yosemite<\/em>,<em> Evangeline<\/em>, and the <em>Golden Jubilee<\/em> and <em>Silver Jubilee<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-962\" title=\"GMLS-07-04-01\" src=\"http:\/\/www.archives.nd.edu\/about\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/GMLS-07-04-01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2011\/06\/GMLS-07-04-01.jpg 576w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2011\/06\/GMLS-07-04-01-300x242.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 576px) 85vw, 576px\" \/><em>Crew of the <\/em>Silver Jubilee<em>, 1896<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Arthur Chase, Charles Neizer (Niezer), Edward Gilmartin, Jenaro Davila,<br \/>\nCaptain John Mullen, Coxswain George McCarrick, Lucian Wheeler<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The popularity of the Boating Club quickly made it necessary for the construction of a Boat House to store all of the equipment and provide for lounge space for the members of the Boating Club.\u00a0 While probably not the first, the Boat House which still exists today was built in 1873.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-963\" title=\"GNDL-04-20\" src=\"http:\/\/www.archives.nd.edu\/about\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/GNDL-04-20.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"443\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2011\/06\/GNDL-04-20.jpg 576w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndarchives\/files\/2011\/06\/GNDL-04-20-300x231.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 576px) 85vw, 576px\" \/><em>Students around the Boat House on St. Joseph Lake, 1893<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Boating Club would occasionally take trips up to Niles, Michigan, on the St. Joseph River.\u00a0 Crews raced at least twice a year on St. Joseph&#8217;s Lake &#8212;
