Living close to campus and 2. An understanding wife who understands what I do, how I do it and encourages it. \u00a0More than time, it takes energy to chase The Magic&#8211;random interruptions and absences&#8211;and that support keeps the energy up.<\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\">I&#8217;ve gotten more response to the Blood Moon photo than any other picture I&#8217;ve made. \u00a0Ever. \u00a0Thanks for the nice comments on social media, emails and in person. \u00a0I&#8217;ve gotten quite a few questions as well so this blog post will hopefully answer some of those.<\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\"><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\"><strong>1. &#8220;How come my iPhone photo didn&#8217;t look like that?&#8221;<\/strong><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\">Without getting too technical, moon photos usually work best with a telephoto lens and a camera with full manual exposure and focus control. \u00a0The telephoto lens will make the moon appear bigger, and manual exposure is required because the moon is much brighter than people think and most automatic exposure modes will overexpose the moon. \u00a0The moon is so bright, in fact, that un-eclipsed, the Dome would have been a silhouette as it was for me when I made this photo in 2006:<\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/ndphotography\/files\/2014\/10\/06-moon.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1200\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/ndphotography\/files\/2014\/10\/06-moon.jpg\" alt=\"Oct. 5, 2006; Mary statue and moon Photo by Matt Cashore\" width=\"720\" height=\"575\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndphotography\/files\/2014\/10\/06-moon.jpg 720w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndphotography\/files\/2014\/10\/06-moon-300x239.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndphotography\/files\/2014\/10\/06-moon-375x300.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\">The reason the Blood Moon photo worked so well was because the eclipse knocked down the overall brightness as well as the fact that Notre Dame recently re-lit the Main Building with LED lighting which made it much brighter:<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1204\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/ndphotography\/files\/2014\/10\/Dome-Lighting.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by Matt Cashore\/University of Notre Dame\" width=\"720\" height=\"832\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndphotography\/files\/2014\/10\/Dome-Lighting.jpg 720w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndphotography\/files\/2014\/10\/Dome-Lighting-259x300.jpg 259w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\">So thank you Paul Kempf, Tim Golichowski and everyone at ND Utilities for making the Dome brighter and thank you\u2026God\u2026for making the moon dimmer.<\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\"><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\"><strong>2. &#8220;Were you on top of a building?&#8221;<\/strong><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\">Nope, firmly on the ground between Breen-Phillips and Farley. \u00a0The hardest part of making the photo was finding a spot not obscured by trees or a building where the moon and Dome would line up.<\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\">Here&#8217;s my contact sheet of how the moon moved into position:<\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1206\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/ndphotography\/files\/2014\/10\/contact-sheet.jpg\" alt=\"contact sheet\" width=\"720\" height=\"587\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndphotography\/files\/2014\/10\/contact-sheet.jpg 720w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndphotography\/files\/2014\/10\/contact-sheet-300x244.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ndphotography\/files\/2014\/10\/contact-sheet-367x300.jpg 367w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\">\n<div><strong><br \/>\n3. &#8220;You must have been out there a long time.&#8221;<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/div>\n<div>Again, no. \u00a0The Magic, as I mentioned, is brief. \u00a0Thanks to digital camera time stamps I can say with certainty that I began making pictures at\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\"><span class=\"aQJ\">6:20am<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and stopped at\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\"><span class=\"aQJ\">6:46<\/span><\/span>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\">\n<div><strong><br \/>\n4. &#8220;Did you Photoshop that?&#8221;<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/div>\n<div>As the contact sheet hopefully shows, I made adjustments to boost shadow detail, hold highlight detail and adjust color to my recollection of the moment, but the moon was really that size, that color, and in that place.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #222222\">\n<div><strong><br \/>\n5. &#8220;What lens?&#8221;<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/div>\n<div>300mm. \u00a0That was a lucky guess. \u00a0Longer would have made it difficult to have both the moon and the Dome in focus, and shorter would have made the moon appear smaller.
