The oratorio co-commissioned by Notre Dame Vocale, The Tower and The Garden by Gregory Spears, will receive its Midwest premiere by Kosmologia and the Euclid Quartet, as part of the season of Ensemble Concept/21, under the baton and interdisciplinary of Notre Dame Vocale’s director Carmen-Helena Téllez.
The Tower and The Garden, a new work for chorus and string quartet by Gregory Spears, was commissioned with support by The Ann Stookey Fund for New Music in consortium with Grammy winner The Crossing (Donald Nally, director), alongside Volti San Francisco (Robert Geary, director) and Cantori New York (Mark Shapiro, director). It sets texts by Thomas Merton and other Catholic poets.
Carmen-Helena Téllez has conceptualized an interdisciplinary evening, complemented by the premiere of Jorge Muñiz’s The Beatitudes, for chorus, children chorus and string quartet, and the collaboration of choreographer Colin Raybin, projections designer Camilla Tassi, and lighting designer Nich Sikorkski.
