But while there, I did manage to see something memorable. I was able to see Wilde\u2019s tomb before a glass barrier had been put up around it to protect the stone of the tomb.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/oascarwilde\/files\/2022\/01\/DVC00161.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/oascarwilde\/files\/2022\/01\/DVC00161.jpg 640w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/oascarwilde\/files\/2022\/01\/DVC00161-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption>June 16, 2003 &#8211; P\u00e8re Lachaise Cemetery&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Apparently, the practice had started in the late 1990s. One person decided to leave a kiss for the lover of beauty and art, and by the time I visited so many visitors had left red, lip-sticked kisses in Wilde\u2019s honor, eve a plaque asking visitors to respect the tomb instead of defacing it were ignored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wilde died in Paris, not only as an outcaste of his former life\u2014he never saw his children or wife again\u2014but he also died bankrupt. At the time of his death, Wilde received sixth-class burial at Bagneux, outside the city. Years later, and thanks to the efforts of his faithful friend\u2014and former lover\u2014Robert Ross managed to turn the state of Wilde\u2019s estate around and purchase a burial plot &#8220;in perpetuity&#8221; at P\u00e8re Lachaise for Wilde.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"512\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/oascarwilde\/files\/2022\/01\/cropped-cropped-DVC00160.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/oascarwilde\/files\/2022\/01\/cropped-cropped-DVC00160.jpg 512w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/oascarwilde\/files\/2022\/01\/cropped-cropped-DVC00160-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/oascarwilde\/files\/2022\/01\/cropped-cropped-DVC00160-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/oascarwilde\/files\/2022\/01\/cropped-cropped-DVC00160-270x270.jpg 270w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/oascarwilde\/files\/2022\/01\/cropped-cropped-DVC00160-192x192.jpg 192w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/oascarwilde\/files\/2022\/01\/cropped-cropped-DVC00160-180x180.jpg 180w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/oascarwilde\/files\/2022\/01\/cropped-cropped-DVC00160-32x32.jpg 32w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1914, the statue we now see was unveiled. Commissioned a year after the plot had been purchased, Jacob Epstein sculpted a flying naked angel inspired by the British Museum&#8217;s Assyrian figures. The angel\u2019s genitals were hacked off and stolen in the early 1960s, the first instance of Wilde\u2019s tomb being vandalized.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/oascarwilde\/files\/2022\/01\/DVC00157.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/oascarwilde\/files\/2022\/01\/DVC00157.jpg 640w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/oascarwilde\/files\/2022\/01\/DVC00157-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption>Jim Morrison&#8217;s grave site, P\u00e8re Lachaise Cemetery<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A number of famous people are buried at P\u00e8re Lachaise. I managed to stumble on Sarah Bernhardt\u2019s grave site and Jim Morrisson\u2019s, which was also vandalized and littered with marijuana and marijuana paraphernalia. Other famous people buried include Moli\u00e8re, Eug\u00e8ne Delacroix, Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Chopin, Honor\u00e9 de Balzac, Marcel Proust, Georges Seurat, Gertrude Stein, Edith Piaf, Marcel Marceau, and Richard Wright.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/oascarwilde\/files\/2022\/01\/DVC00162.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-43\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/oascarwilde\/files\/2022\/01\/DVC00162.jpg 640w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/oascarwilde\/files\/2022\/01\/DVC00162-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Oscar Wilde\u2019s 111<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;death anniversary, French authorities revealed a barrier that had been put around the tomb. The goal was of course to prevent future mourners from kissing\/defacing\/further damaging Wilde\u2019s tomb. At the time of the unveiling, Merlin Holland\u2014Wilde\u2019s grandson\u2014 did acknowledge that, while the barrier was designed to be an unobtrusive and aesthetic deterrent, he stated that &#8220;some determined kissers will no doubt try to find ways of kissing the upper extremities.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When I visited Paris in 2003, I went to P\u00e8re Lachaise Cemetery because it was the thing to do.
