{"id":10,"date":"2017-11-06T18:32:18","date_gmt":"2017-11-06T22:32:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/operation-frankenstein\/?page_id=10"},"modified":"2018-04-30T11:10:33","modified_gmt":"2018-04-30T15:10:33","slug":"home","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/operation-frankenstein\/home\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Frankenstein Matters at 200: Rethinking the Human through the Arts and Sciences, July 4-6, 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-80 \" src=\"http:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/operation-frankenstein\/files\/2017\/12\/PF-FINAL-copy2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"399\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/operation-frankenstein\/files\/2017\/12\/PF-FINAL-copy2.jpg 1929w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/operation-frankenstein\/files\/2017\/12\/PF-FINAL-copy2-289x300.jpg 289w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/operation-frankenstein\/files\/2017\/12\/PF-FINAL-copy2-768x797.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/operation-frankenstein\/files\/2017\/12\/PF-FINAL-copy2-987x1024.jpg 987w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 399px) 100vw, 399px\" \/>This bicentennial conference on the persisting cultural and scientific impact of Mary Shelley\u2019s <em>Frankenstein<\/em> will take place July 4-6, 2018 at the University of Notre Dame\u2019s Rome Global Gateway facility, adjacent to the Coliseum.\u00a0 The conference will bring together a group of distinguished scholars (30-35) from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds across the sciences, humanities, and arts to interact on the continuing urgency of <em>Frankenstein<\/em>\u2014the most widely taught novel worldwide at the university level\u2014for a broad spectrum of pressing concerns in such fields as bioethics, genetics, artificial intelligence, evolutionary theory, environmental studies, race relations and colonialism, literary and theater studies, human rights, refugee studies, gender studies, disability studies, philosophy, and religious studies.<\/p>\n<p>The organizing theme of this event considers how Shelley\u2019s gripping\u00a0 novel, and its many theatrical and screen adaptations over the years, have shaped or may shape our evolving comprehension of the human experience, especially in relation to art, culture, science, technology, ethics, and politics most broadly conceived.<\/p>\n<p>The finalized conference line-up of speakers features, among other leading writers, Joyce Carol Oates and includes the following speakers: \u00a0Stuart Curran, Anne Mellor, Jeffrey Cox, Timothy Morton, David Punter, Mary Jacobus, James Chandler, Susan Wolfson, Serena Baiesi, and Claire Connolly (literary studies and Romanticism); Steven B. Smith, Nancy J.
