In particular, I study how <em>Schoenoplectus \u00a0<\/em><i>americanus\u00a0<\/i>evolution influences the overall carbon budget and accretion of salt marshes in the Chesapeake Bay.<\/p>\n<p>Our research group, including scientists from the University\u00a0of Notre Dame, University of Tennessee, and the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center combines field measurements, greenhouse experiments, genetic analysis, and modeling to better understand the magnitude and impact of\u00a0<i>S.\u00a0americanus<\/i>\u00a0evolution on the past, present, and future structure and function of this valuable ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Personal website:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mvahsen.weebly.com\">http:\/\/mvahsen.weebly.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Graduate Student I am a first year PhD student with an interest in how\u00a0evolution can influence and even drive important ecological processes.
