{"id":1020,"date":"2015-01-07T16:30:58","date_gmt":"2015-01-07T16:30:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/patentlaw\/?p=1020"},"modified":"2015-01-07T16:30:58","modified_gmt":"2015-01-07T16:30:58","slug":"we-are-family","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/patentlaw\/2015\/01\/07\/we-are-family\/","title":{"rendered":"We are family"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_1021\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/patentlaw\/files\/2015\/01\/paint.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1021\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1021\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/patentlaw\/files\/2015\/01\/paint-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Members of the MSPL at Wine and Canvas for a fun holiday party!\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/patentlaw\/files\/2015\/01\/paint-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/patentlaw\/files\/2015\/01\/paint-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/patentlaw\/files\/2015\/01\/paint.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1021\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Members of the MSPL at Wine and Canvas for a fun holiday party!<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>A post from our student blogger Megan<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The European Patent Office (EPO) defines a patent family as \u201ca set of either patent applications or publications taken in multiple countries to protect a single invention by a common inventor(s) and then patented in more than one country. \u00a0A first application is made in one country \u2013 the priority \u2013 and is then extended to other offices.\u201d\u00a0 This simply means that you can apply for a patent on one invention in one country and receive patents for the same invention in many countries.\u00a0 You can research patent families and tracespecific publications to the original patent application document.\u00a0 All the patent documents are related, hence the name \u201cfamily.\u201d\u00a0 The Master of Science in Patent Law program is a lot like one of these patent families.<\/p>\n<p>Each student in the program fulfills a certain niche.\u00a0 There are four doctoral degree students, two doctorates of law, and each MSPL member has an undergraduate degree in either the hard sciences or engineering.\u00a0 While we are all different, we also share quite a bit in common.\u00a0 We struggled to write claims during the first semester.\u00a0 We laughed at each other\u2019s outlandish comments in class.\u00a0 We shared our worries and our frustrations.\u00a0 We became a family over the first semester of the program.<\/p>\n<p>The most important thing we each shared over the last four months is perhaps our friendships.\u00a0 Through our common experience of going through the program together we bonded in a very unique way.\u00a0 Just like your real family, sometimes you get impatient with your family members and sometimes you even get a little annoyed with them.\u00a0 But in the end, you are family and you stick together.\u00a0 Sure, we\u2019ve gotten to do fun activities together like go to a baseball game and have a painting party.\u00a0 But it is the day to day experience of becoming patent practitioners that has strengthened our bond and brought us together.\u00a0 We are fortunate to have each other and have made a point to celebrate each MSPL member\u2019s birthday outside the classroom.\u00a0 We are a family\u2014a patent family.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A post from our student blogger Megan The European Patent Office (EPO) defines a patent family as \u201ca set of either patent applications or publications taken in multiple countries to protect a single invention by a common inventor(s) and then &hellip;
