{"id":219,"date":"2012-07-25T13:29:02","date_gmt":"2012-07-25T13:29:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/patentlaw\/?p=219"},"modified":"2012-07-15T23:55:06","modified_gmt":"2012-07-15T23:55:06","slug":"patent-pros-at-work-in-universities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/patentlaw\/2012\/07\/25\/patent-pros-at-work-in-universities\/","title":{"rendered":"Patent Pros at Work in Universities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/patentlaw\/files\/2012\/07\/license.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-223 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/patentlaw\/files\/2012\/07\/license.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"275\" \/><\/a>We take pride in noting that patent agents have a wealth of career opportunities\u2014with law firms, the USPTO, and within corporations&#8217; intellectual property divisions, but we haven\u2019t yet mentioned those in our own backyard\u2014universities eager to commercialize the technologies they\u2019ve developed.<\/p>\n<p>Take this quote from a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.inc.com\/laura-smoliar\/licensing-what-you-need-to-know.html\">recent article on Inc.com<\/a>:\u00a0\u201cOne source of new technologies is our national labs and universities that get federal funding. Their mission is to find commercial partners to bring inventions out of the lab and turn them into real products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most universities now have distinct departments devoted to facilitating this process. At Notre Dame, it\u2019s the <a href=\"http:\/\/ott.nd.edu\/\">Office of Technology Transfer<\/a>. Among their functions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To secure legal protection (patents) for ND technologies,<\/li>\n<li>To market those technologies to companies that are well positioned to bring them to the marketplace,<\/li>\n<li>To negotiate and execute licenses transferring rights in ND technologies to such companies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Just a brief look at the current\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ott.nd.edu\/technologies\/\">technologies put forth by the university <\/a>and you can see the win-win opportunity that patent licensing makes possible, for startup companies and universities alike.<\/p>\n<p>Not to mention the opportunity for the facilitator! Consider it: a job in which you are on the forefront of every advancement that comes out of a university, where you\u2019re the bridge between the academy and the business world, making new technologies available for public benefit.
