{"id":955,"date":"2014-09-22T14:15:15","date_gmt":"2014-09-22T14:15:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/patentlaw\/?p=955"},"modified":"2014-09-09T19:57:35","modified_gmt":"2014-09-09T19:57:35","slug":"taking-the-field","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/patentlaw\/2014\/09\/22\/taking-the-field\/","title":{"rendered":"Taking the Field"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/patentlaw\/files\/2014\/09\/Roberto-blog-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-956\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/patentlaw\/files\/2014\/09\/Roberto-blog-3-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"Roberto blog 3\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/patentlaw\/files\/2014\/09\/Roberto-blog-3-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/patentlaw\/files\/2014\/09\/Roberto-blog-3-1024x575.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/patentlaw\/files\/2014\/09\/Roberto-blog-3-500x281.jpg 500w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/patentlaw\/files\/2014\/09\/Roberto-blog-3.jpg 1430w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>A post from our student blogger Roberto<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After all the anticipation and preparation our first week of studies is finally in the books.\u00a0 After searching the beautiful campus we have found all of our classrooms and have met all of our instructors.\u00a0 And after the first football game of the year we have all been unofficially initiated into the Irish family.\u00a0 As students in the MSPL, most of us take courses in patent law and prosecution, patent application drafting, patent searching, as well as our capstone project and two science or engineering electives of our choice.\u00a0 All of our MSPL courses are taught by current or retired patent professionals who have a wealth of experience in their fields and are preparing us to hit the ground running after graduation.<\/p>\n<p>By far the largest pillar in the MSPL curriculum is the capstone project I mentioned earlier.\u00a0 Throughout the course of the year each MSPL student will work directly with an inventor at Notre Dame to go through the entire process of patenting their work.\u00a0 To do this we meet with our inventors regularly to work through the process with them.\u00a0 Our meetings during the first week of classes consisted mainly of getting to know the inventor and the research.\u00a0 As an engineer, this was a really enjoyable part of my week.\u00a0 I loved getting to know the inventor, research, and invention.\u00a0 My curiosity keeps me asking questions.\u00a0 How does it work?\u00a0 Why does it work this way, and why does it have this part?\u00a0 Can it do this?\u00a0 Why doesn\u2019t it do this?\u00a0 The answers to all of which, will greatly help me draft a patent that will protect every aspect of what the invention is and could be.<\/p>\n<p>While the academic and professional activities I took part in during the first week of school were fun, I would be lying to say that the football game against Rice was not the best part.\u00a0 My father, brother and I all got to go to the game and had amazing seats directly opposite of the student section.\u00a0 From where we sat we could see everything.\u00a0 We saw the crowd pour into the stadium and we saw the student body quake and move in unison, we saw the band draw out complicated patterns on the field, and we saw the Irish dominate on their new turf.\u00a0 As I took it all in, I couldn\u2019t help but feel like I was a part of something special.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A post from our student blogger Roberto After all the anticipation and preparation our first week of studies is finally in the books.\u00a0 After searching the beautiful campus we have found all of our classrooms and have met all of &hellip;
