Patrick J. Flynn is Professor of Computer Science & Engineering<\/a> and Fritz Duda Family Professor of Engineering at the University of Notre Dame<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He <\/span>received the B.S. in Electrical Engineering (1985), the M.S. in <\/span>Computer Science (1986), and the Ph.D. in Computer Science (1990), all <\/span>from Michigan State University<\/a>. <\/span>Dr. Flynn has held faculty <\/span>positions at Notre Dame (1990-1991, 2001-present), Washington State University<\/a><\/span> (1991-1998), and The Ohio State University<\/a> (1998-2001). <\/span>In 2007-2008, he held a visiting scientist appointment at the <\/span>National Institute of Standards and Technology<\/a> during a sabbatical <\/span>leave. In 2022-2023 he held an adjunct professorship in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University<\/a> during a sabbatical leave.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 2017-2022 he was Chair of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. In 2016-2017 he served as Director of Notre Dame California, during which he designed and piloted the Silicon Valley Semester off-campus semester for Notre Dame undergraduates.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

His research interests include computer vision, biometrics, <\/span>and image processing. He has advised or co-advised twenty-one <\/span>Ph.D. dissertations, ten postdoctoral fellows, twenty-two M.S. <\/span>theses, and two B.S. theses.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Flynn is an IEEE<\/a> Fellow, an IAPR<\/a> <\/span>Fellow, an AAIA Fellow, and an ACM<\/a> Distinguished Scientist. He was the Editor-in-Chief <\/span>of the IEEE Biometrics Compendium<\/a><\/em> from 2016-2017, and is a past Associate <\/span>Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Trans. on PAMI<\/a><\/em>, and a past Associate Editor <\/span>of IEEE TIFS<\/a><\/em>, IEEE TIP<\/a><\/em>, IEEE TPAMI<\/a><\/em>, Pattern Recognition<\/a><\/em>, and Pattern Recognition Letters<\/a><\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has received outstanding teaching awards <\/span>from Washington State University and the University of Notre Dame, <\/span>and Meritorious Service, Golden Core, Certificate of Achievement, <\/span>and Technical Achievement awards from the IEEE Computer Society.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
