For more than two and a quarter centuries, the Society has embraced the principles of freedom of inquiry and liberty of thought and expression. Phi Beta Kappa (\u03a6\u0392\u039a) stands for \u03a6\u03b9\u03bb\u03bf\u03c3\u03bf\u03c6\u03af\u03b1 \u0392\u03af\u03bf\u03c5 \u039a\u03c5\u03b2\u03b5\u03c1\u03bd\u03ae\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 in Greek (Philosophia Biou Kybern\u0113t\u0113s in Latin letters), which means &#8220;Love of learning is the guide of life,&#8221; the motto of the Society. These ideas, symbolized on Phi Beta Kappa&#8217;s distinctive gold key, still lay the foundations of personal freedom, scientific inquiry, liberty of conscience, and creative endeavor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text style4\">In February of 1968, after many years of waiting and dedicated effort by its first president, Professor Bernard Kohlbrenner, a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa was chartered at Notre Dame, as Epsilon of Indiana.
