Hosted at Venable LLP, the two-day event was a powerhouse of collaboration, bringing together the sharpest minds from the Defense Health Agency (DHA), DARPA, and private industry to map out the future of military medicine<sup><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The energy in the room was palpable, and for good reason. The agenda was packed with critical insights on how we can revamp R&amp;D to ensure our warfighters remain ready and lethal<sup><\/sup>. Here are a few key takeaways from my time in DC:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Joint &amp; Service Needs are Evolving:<\/strong> It was fascinating to hear directly from leadership across the services\u2014including the Navy, Air Force, and Army\u2014about their specific operational gaps. The focus is shifting heavily toward expeditionary medicine and capabilities that can sustain the warfighter in austere environments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Power of Partnership:<\/strong> A major theme throughout the summit was the necessity of public-private partnerships. Whether it\u2019s navigating intellectual property rights or leveraging non-dilutive funding, the message was clear: the DoD cannot solve these problems alone. We need industry and academia to step up.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Emerging Medical Capabilities:<\/strong> The breakout sessions on Day 1 were particularly enlightening. We dove deep into cutting-edge areas like <strong>Brain Health and Cognitive Monitoring<\/strong>, <strong>Organ-on-a-Chip<\/strong> models for biothreat evaluation, and <strong>Biologics on-Demand Manufacturing<\/strong>\u2014technologies that are rapidly moving from sci-fi concepts to field-deployable reality.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Investment Landscape:<\/strong> Day 2 offered a candid look at the financial side of defense innovation.
