Chuck Hurley, Assistant Vice President & University Registrar, spoke on the implementation of the Comprehensive Learner Record (CLR) that will be available to students, representing a more holistic representation of their academic and extracurricular activities while at Notre Dame, and the data building blocks and decisions necessary to create these.
Adrea Hernandez, Executive Director of Institutional Research, presented on the importance of wire framing and walked us through a fun, seasonal exercise to practice wire framing.

Pedro Ribeiro, Vice President for Public Affairs and Communications, presented and emphasized the need for a data-driven approach to audience segmentation, message testing, and outcome-oriented data analysis in higher education, particularly in improving public perceptions of research universities and enhancing communication strategies through both internal efforts and partnerships with external data providers.
Joel Dosmann, Data Warehouse Architect in OIT, talked on the Snowflake data warehouse platform and its role in supporting analytics and reporting needs at the University of Notre Dame, emphasizing its scalability, security, and data sharing features, along with the comparison of the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) and Data Lake offerings to enable more effective data-driven decision-making across campus.
Steve Sporinsky, Business Intelligence Specialist in OIT, introduces Tableau Prep Builder as a tool to simplify and streamline data preparation for reporting, explaining its ability to ingest, clean, and output data for easier analysis without needing extensive SQL knowledge, and highlighting its potential to improve efficiency in data workflows across the university.
Pieter Visser, B.I. Solutions Architect in OIT, provides simple tips for improving dashboards by focusing on layout, color, spacing, and functionality, demonstrating how to clean up a basic dashboard, use consistent templates, and apply practical techniques such as adding context, simplifying charts, and enhancing user experience. David Go, Vice President and Associate Provost for Academic Strategy and Viola D. Hank Professor, Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering presented on measuring progress on the objectives in the Strategic Framework and how we best understand the impact these objectives are having.
Nitesh Chawla, Director of the Lucy Family Institute for Data and Society and Frank M. Freimann Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, discussed the current projects of the Lucy Family Institute for Data and Society and the impact of their recent research.
In the recurring series “Tableau Tips and Tricks,” Joe Lyphout, Program Director for Faculty Data & Systems in the Provost Office, and Pieter Visser, Business Intelligence Solutions Architect at OIT, showcased two Tableau dashboards featuring how to create a Help button and the new Dynamic Zone Visibility functionality.

Ryan Willerton, Associate Vice President for Career and Professional Development presented on the exciting things that his team uses data for to help students on their career path. Jonathan Anderstrom, Insurance & Financial Risk Assistant Manager, Treasury Services shared his team’s journey in making the shift to a metric’s-focused culture. Cheryl Schlimpert, Endowed Programs Program Manager in Accounting & Financial Services, demonstrated how to automatically send Qualtrics data to Tableau as a data source by way of Google Sheets. Jennifer Brackett, Assistant Registrar, and Amanda Ackerman, Application Developer on the Enterprise Data & Analytics team in OIT, shared a few ways to present sensitive data.

David Bailey, Vice President for Institutional Research, Innovation and Strategy, kicked off the meeting by discussing data sharing and responsible use of University data. He thanked our group for the work we’ve done with data & analysis, helping people to make better decisions and move projects forward. We will continue to work together to help achieve the objectives in the strategic framework. Mike Brach, Campus Data Steward (OIT), continued the discussion around responsible use and data sharing. Helen Hockx-Yu, Enterprise Architect (OIT), presented on finding the right storage solution for data. Joe Lyphout, Program Director Faculty Data & Systems (Office of the Provost) and Pieter Visser, BI Solutions Architect (OIT), demonstrated and shared some time-saving tableau tips and tricks. Links to the tableau workbook, which includes these tips, and to the DIY challenge are included in the slide presentation. Dana Schrader, Business Intelligence Professional (IRIS/OIT) shared a fun holiday trivia use of Tableau. Matt Smith, Project Manager (OIT), closed out the meeting by providing information on protecting collaborative content in Google & Box.

John McGreevy, Charles and Jill Fischer Provost, spoke about the University Strategic Plan and the importance of data, analytics, and reporting to implementing, measuring, and tracking the initiatives within the framework. Joe Lyphout (Office of the Provost) and Pieter Visser demonstrated and shared some time-saving tableau tips and tricks. Kate Moody (Center for Career Development) spoke about steps to consider when publishing a dashboard to Tableau Public. The Center for Career Development First Destination dashboard is published to Tableau public and a link can be found in the slides. Dana Schrader (IRIS/OIT) and Steve Sporinsky (OIT) wrapped up the meeting sharing some of the Tableau training that we have done in the past and asked for feedback, via a survey sent out after the meeting, on future office hours and learning opportunities.

Jane Livingston (VP for Information Technology and CIO) and David Bailey (VP for Strategic Planning and Institutional Research) spoke on their support for this group and how we can build the reporting and analytics culture at the university. Adrea Hernandez (OSPIR) and Mary Tarsha (OSPIR) presented on conducting surveys at the university and best practices. Kendall Smith (OSPIR) spoke on Artificial Intelligence and use cases in higher ed. Jess Langager (OIT) wrapped up the meeting with tips on where to find OIT supported tools and software to improve your workflow.
3/30/2023: The First Meeting
Our kick-off meeting included a introduction to the group and why it was formed, breakout sessions to meet others and learn how they use data now and how they’d like to improve data usage in the future.
