From February to November 1918 he saw&nbsp;periodic action on the Western Front, fighting at the 2nd Battle of&nbsp;the Marne, at Saint-Mihiel, and in the Meuse-Argonne offensive.&nbsp;On 1 July 1918 he was promoted from 1st lieutenant to captain,&nbsp;and command of the 150th Field Artillery&#8217;s Battery B.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2015\/08\/MSN-MN_0506-v2-095v_96r.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"707\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2015\/08\/MSN-MN_0506-v2-095v_96r-1024x707.jpg\" alt=\"Opening, three full length portraits of soldiers at left (two and one), text from July 12, 1918, at right.\" class=\"wp-image-216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2015\/08\/MSN-MN_0506-v2-095v_96r-1024x707.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2015\/08\/MSN-MN_0506-v2-095v_96r-300x207.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2015\/08\/MSN-MN_0506-v2-095v_96r-434x300.jpg 434w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2015\/08\/MSN-MN_0506-v2-095v_96r.jpg 1737w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Volume 2, opening 95v-96r.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At some&nbsp;point after the war Barbour compiled an extensive four-volume&nbsp;illustrated narrative of his military experiences, entitled &#8220;With the&nbsp;42nd Division, 1917-19.&#8221; Around 220 typed pages of memoir,&nbsp;drawn by Barbour from wartime letters and perhaps a journal, are&nbsp;interspersed with more than 400 photographic prints, photo&nbsp;postcards, and published halftones relevant to the text.
