This holiday was started in 2002 by Jodi Jill, a syndicated newspaper puzzle maker and professional quiz maker. In honor of the holiday, the curator of our next exhibit, &#8220;In a Civilized Nation: Newspapers, Magazines, and the Print Revolution in 19th-Century Peru,&#8221; shares a couple of puzzles from two of the serials that will be featured in the exhibit. The exhibit will open in early February.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">by Erika Hosselkus, <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.library.nd.edu\/directory\/employees\/ehosselk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Curator, Latin American Collections<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The periodicals of nineteenth-century Peru often featured puzzles, from riddles (<em>charadas<\/em>) to rebuses (<em>gerogl\u00edficos<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2018\/01\/BOO_004513202-Ano1-No22-180.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"811\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2018\/01\/BOO_004513202-Ano1-No22-180-811x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2821\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2018\/01\/BOO_004513202-Ano1-No22-180-811x1024.jpg 811w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2018\/01\/BOO_004513202-Ano1-No22-180-238x300.jpg 238w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2018\/01\/BOO_004513202-Ano1-No22-180-768x970.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2018\/01\/BOO_004513202-Ano1-No22-180.jpg 1900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 811px) 100vw, 811px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The March 13, 1875 issue of <em>La Alborada<\/em>, a weekly magazine on literature, art, education, theater, and fashion, featuring the writing of Peruvian women, contains a word puzzle in the middle of the third column. Readers decoded riddles such as this one to discover a one-word or multi-word solution. In this case, the puzzle creator provides clues about the three syllables comprising the word <em>camisa<\/em> (shirt), her one-word solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A loose translation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although foreign, it is known<br>\nThat when I join my first syllable to my third,<br>\nIt results in a familiar mansion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Creating a similar union<br>\nBetween my third and my first syllables;<br>\nI obtain a verb and a &#8220;sack,&#8221;<br>\n&#8220;larger than&#8221; any other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My second (syllable) is a pronoun<br>\nAnd it runs into my third,<br>\nEach week, every person<br>\nShould go (to this) at least once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I will say, in conclusion<br>\nThat something that you find on me<br>\nAnd that you find also on yourself<br>\nWill turn out to be the solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A.A.A.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The author of this puzzle offered up a prize to be given to one of the first four subscribers to submit a solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Solutions to the puzzle (<em>Soluciones \u00e1 la charada del n\u00fam. 22<\/em>) appear in a later issue, shown below. Some answers, like the one sent in by Ubalda Plasencia, are written in verse, like the puzzle itself. The prize for decoding this puzzle was 200 packs of cigarettes. Fittingly, the sponsor of the puzzle was a tobacco vendor.
