{"id":6832,"date":"2021-09-27T09:00:29","date_gmt":"2021-09-27T13:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/?p=6832"},"modified":"2025-10-03T13:37:41","modified_gmt":"2025-10-03T17:37:41","slug":"national-hispanic-heritage-month-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/national-hispanic-heritage-month-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"National Hispanic Heritage Month 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>We join the Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution, and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum&nbsp;in celebrating <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/hispanicheritagemonth.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Hispanic Heritage Month<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Migratory History from a Child&#8217;s Point of View<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>by <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/library.nd.edu\/directory\/employees\/ehosselk\" target=\"_blank\">Erika Hosselkus, <em>Curator, Latin American Collections<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month, we share this <em>Migratory History of La Raza<\/em> coloring book, printed in 1974 by El Renacimiento, a branch of the Lansing, Michigan publisher Renaissance Publications. Emerging from the city\u2019s vibrant and active Chicano community, the coloring book narrates the history of the U.S. Chicano population in pictures and bilingual text, for Michigan\u2019s Chicano youth. Michigan-based Chicano artist, David Torrez, produced both the history and the drawings included in the title, which is as much textbook and activist statement as coloring book.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2021\/09\/MSH-LAT_0099-112-0001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"725\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2021\/09\/MSH-LAT_0099-112-0001-725x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6844\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2021\/09\/MSH-LAT_0099-112-0001-725x1024.jpg 725w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2021\/09\/MSH-LAT_0099-112-0001-213x300.jpg 213w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2021\/09\/MSH-LAT_0099-112-0001-768x1084.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2021\/09\/MSH-LAT_0099-112-0001-1088x1536.jpg 1088w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2021\/09\/MSH-LAT_0099-112-0001.jpg 1275w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 725px) 100vw, 725px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The coloring book\u2019s activist stance and message are evident even from its cover. Printed on glossy cardstock, it features a Chicano boy, dressed in Southwestern clothing, smiling and waving to a young girl who stands on the other side of a river &#8211; most certainly the Rio Grande. The young girl is dressed in the traditional clothing and head covering of the Tehuana, a female cultural type associated with the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region of far southern Mexico. Through this image, Torrez links the U.S. Chicano population with residents of Mexico and extends Mexican cultural identity from the country\u2019s border with Guatemala up into the United States \u2013 well beyond the country\u2019s political boundaries. Two open and pleasant-looking bridges span the Rio Grand, connecting Mexican Americans and residents of Mexico and advocating friendship and camaraderie between them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2021\/09\/MSH-LAT_0099-112-0003.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"811\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2021\/09\/MSH-LAT_0099-112-0003-811x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6840\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2021\/09\/MSH-LAT_0099-112-0003-811x1024.jpg 811w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2021\/09\/MSH-LAT_0099-112-0003-238x300.jpg 238w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2021\/09\/MSH-LAT_0099-112-0003-768x970.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2021\/09\/MSH-LAT_0099-112-0003-1216x1536.jpg 1216w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2021\/09\/MSH-LAT_0099-112-0003-1621x2048.jpg 1621w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2021\/09\/MSH-LAT_0099-112-0003.jpg 1900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 811px) 100vw, 811px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Montcalm County Intermediate School District, located in Stanton, Michigan, an agricultural area located north of Lansing and home to significant populations of migrant workers in the 1970s, contributed to the development of the coloring book as part of a migrant education project. The border and two small birds on the title page might appear entirely decorative, but they are an appropriation of symbols of Mexican \u2013 even indigenous Mexican \u2013 identity. They are Aztec eagles and they frame publication details, including a statement that the book was \u201cPrinted in AZTLAN\u201d \u2013 the birthplace of the Aztecs. Like many Chicano initiatives of this era, Michigan\u2019s activists found resonance in these Native references that seemed devoid of European influence or content. Through the eagles and references to Aztlan, they harkened back to an idealized indigenous past.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2021\/09\/MSH-LAT_0099-112-0004.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"811\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2021\/09\/MSH-LAT_0099-112-0004-811x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6841\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2021\/09\/MSH-LAT_0099-112-0004-811x1024.jpg 811w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2021\/09\/MSH-LAT_0099-112-0004-238x300.jpg 238w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2021\/09\/MSH-LAT_0099-112-0004-768x970.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2021\/09\/MSH-LAT_0099-112-0004-1216x1536.jpg 1216w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2021\/09\/MSH-LAT_0099-112-0004-1621x2048.jpg 1621w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2021\/09\/MSH-LAT_0099-112-0004.jpg 1900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 811px) 100vw, 811px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Page 2 provides the children for whom this coloring book was created a brief, unbiased definition of \u201cmigrant child\u201d in English and Spanish. It links the definition specifically to movement between school districts and to agricultural and food-processing industries, but not to race or ethnicity. This issue received attention from the federal government at the time that the coloring book was issued, though improvements for laborers were often slow and uneven.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with this source geared toward children, El Renacimiento produced a newspaper of the same name that focused on the Chicano Rights movement and was published in Lansing from the 1970s through 1990s.
