In these publications, which largely targeted white audiences, Black women claimed new platforms for their voices and ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">African American women were a foundational part of the United States\u2019 women\u2019s movement and 1970s feminism. The athletes interviewed in <em>womenSports, <\/em>for example, identified how sexism intersected with racism in sports and in larger contemporary society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/findit.library.nd.edu\/Record\/005108431\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>womenSports<\/em> magazine<\/a>, founded in 1974 by tennis star Billie Jean King in conjunction with the Women&#8217;s Sports Foundation, was one of the earliest popular magazines focused on women athletes. The glossy publication reported on professional and amateur sports and also provided practical tips to readers on everything from self-defense to the recently enacted Title IX legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/02\/BOX_005108431-Vol04No07_0001.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"711\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/02\/BOX_005108431-Vol04No07_0001-711x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/02\/BOX_005108431-Vol04No07_0001-711x1024.jpg 711w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/02\/BOX_005108431-Vol04No07_0001-208x300.jpg 208w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/02\/BOX_005108431-Vol04No07_0001-768x1106.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/02\/BOX_005108431-Vol04No07_0001-1067x1536.jpg 1067w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/02\/BOX_005108431-Vol04No07_0001.jpg 1250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 711px) 100vw, 711px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>womenSports<\/em> covered the athletic triumphs and biographies of African American women and often introduced Black sportswomen to wider reading audiences for the first time. Writers and editors frequently documented and wrote about the gender discrimination experienced by women athletes\u2013Black and white\u2013but they tended to devote less attention to racial prejudice encountered by African American women in sports. Black athletes themselves frequently spoke to the entwined race and gender bias they encountered.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the pages of <em>womenSports <\/em>in 1974, Wyomia Tyus, the Olympic champion sprinter, described economic consequences of prejudice she faced on the professional track circuit. After a corporate sponsor dropped her event, Tyus explained, &#8220;all the women in our event are black, but if we had a white woman in it, I think the &#8230; company would&#8217;ve picked us up.&#8221; And about a recent meet in San Francisco, Tyus observed, \u201cthe men who won got television sets, and the women who won got medals. That just isn\u2019t fair. Settling for left-overs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/02\/womenSports-Wyomia.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"725\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/02\/womenSports-Wyomia-1024x725.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/02\/womenSports-Wyomia-1024x725.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/02\/womenSports-Wyomia-300x213.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/02\/womenSports-Wyomia-768x544.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/02\/womenSports-Wyomia-1536x1088.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/02\/womenSports-Wyomia.jpg 1800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two years later Olympian Madeline Manning Jackson, a middle-distance runner, pointed to the lack of funding for a sport that featured many African American women athletes. Jackson had recently declined an invitation to compete in the Pan American Games for the United States after the Amateur Athletic Association, which governed track and field events, failed to fund her trip or provide any compensation. \u201cI could have gone even if they didn&#8217;t pay,\u201d she explained, \u201cbut it made me mad\u2013not just for me but for all the other girls who have to put up with this kind of treatment. . . . I could have gone. I just wouldn\u2019t.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/02\/womenSports-Olympian.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"868\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/02\/womenSports-Olympian-1024x868.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/02\/womenSports-Olympian-1024x868.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/02\/womenSports-Olympian-300x254.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/02\/womenSports-Olympian-768x651.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/02\/womenSports-Olympian-1536x1301.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/02\/womenSports-Olympian.jpg 1800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to <em>womenSports<\/em>, the library recently acquired two titles that bracket the 1970s and represent different voices within the American feminist movement. Cellestine Ware\u2019s article, \u201cBlack Feminism,\u201d appeared in an annual publication of the radical wing of the movement, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/findit.library.nd.edu\/Record\/006295849\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Notes From the Third Year: Women\u2019s Liberation<\/a><\/em>. Ware was a member of the Stanton-Anthony Brigade, a circle of radical feminists in New York City, and author of <em>Woman Power: The Movement for Women\u2019s Liberation<\/em> (1970). Ware\u2019s new Black feminist theory and Hunt\u2019s history explained how race, gender, and class inequality developed historically. African American women created a platform for their ideas within these 1970s feminist magazines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rare Books and Special Collections holds a growing collection of printed and other material documenting African Americans and women during the late twentieth century.
